๐ฒโฒMY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE/ MI EXPERIENCIA PERSONAL๐คด๐ธ

From a distance we can confuse the convent with a castle because its architecture is quite similar, its construction represents a beautiful and great Portuguese history, to reach this tourist site we must go to the city of Tomar, which is located in the district of Santarem We would have to travel to the center of Portugal, the entrance was 4 euros since they gave us a "family" discount for being several people, I was accompanied by my wife, sister, and my friend Zuly, who always accompanies me on my trips when I visit the north!

I want to be the first person to know all the castles and tourist sites in Portugal, it is a special hobby that I have and which I enjoy so much, currently I have already visited more than 6 castles from those further north to those in the south, it was a visit of more or less 1 hour and a half can actually take about 2 hours easily, because the convent has too many spaces to visit, it is quite old its foundation dates back to 1162, it was founded by a great Portuguese character called "Gualdim Pais" this Mr. was a member of the Templars was also the founder of the city where the convent "Tomar" is๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ง๐โโ๏ธ

If you read a bit of history about the Templars you realize that they were very advanced and many of them were rich here in Portugal, to refresh your memory a Templar was a person who belonged to a religious theology in this case "Catholicism" and who were trained as warriors to defend the beliefs of their "religion", in history they were not known for doing "good" things on the contrary they carried out massacres in many towns with those who were considered "heretics"๐โโ๏ธ๐ฐ๐ฏ

The Templars were known for creating a great banking system, in fact it is said that it was the most important in the world! When we arrived at the facilities we found a beautiful, very old and well-preserved wall, we passed through a beautiful garden that surrounds the convent until we reached the patio, I personally recommend visiting the convent in summer, the weather is very good and you have a nice sun to take some nice pictures! Inside the convent there are hundreds of pieces that belonged to the Templar monks and we can photograph pieces that are many centuries old!

The "Organization" finished this work they were called: "order of Christ" who were warrior Templar monks, in the 14th century some areas of the convent were built, decades later in 1529 the king of Portugal John III the "Pious" made a great amount of works to the convent so we can summarize that it was an architecture with many works for many years! A combination of architectures was executed to create this beautiful convent from Gothic to Renaissance, I always think that before people were much smaller than today and it is easy to see in their tombs, but they made imposing and gigantic constructions! it was a way to symbolize power!

The convent was built on a hill being one of the highest in the city of Tomar, this gives us a beautiful 360 degree view of the entire city and giving an incomparable view of nature, the surrounding walls are from the castle of Tomar which is very close to the convent, so it gives us an idea that the site was also built for military purposes to defend the Portuguese territory! It caught my attention that there is some evidence of Roman constructions along the route, that is, the castle and the convent were built under a Roman city, and like many places in Portugal, we learn with this that the Romans and Arabs populated Portugal long before it was a " nation"๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐ง๐จโ๐ซ

In 1983 the convent was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, if I could summarize what is inside the convent it would be: "seven centuries of Portuguese history" that is why there is no way and form you can leave here without learning something new! Inside I saw several tombs, many written in Latin, quite Christian decorations.

It all starts with the first king of Portugal who was Henrique Alfonso who ended up giving away many territories in the area of the current "taking" to the Knights Templar of Jerusalem, there is no historical record that confirms this story but it is a legend that "the Newly arrived warriors chose a high area to build a castle that he would call "take" exactly in 1160 he was sent to populate the region of Tomar!

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TEMPLARS???/ QUE PASO CON LOS TEMPLARIOS๐คด๐ธ

What happened later was that after 200 years there was a persecution of King Philippe of France against the Templars and in 1314 this powerful order was exterminated, everything that was in the hands of the Templars ended up being returned and integrated into the country, but the warriors they would not disappear and in 1319 they created a new order called: "militia knights of christ" although it had a different objective than the order of the catholic church!

A NEW ORDER/ UN NUEVO ORDEN๐คด๐ธ

The new order of the "Templars" were now under the command of D. Henrique and would have a very important role for the Portuguese country since they would help the discoveries that took place in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries many years later the Knights Templar They would transform into navigators who would go around the world conquering territories and taking the "faith" to new territories, have you ever wondered why the Portuguese caravels carried a red cross??? I think you know the answer now! symbolized the cross of the knights of christ!โโ
