Hubby said it was a beautiful day and suggested a short walk around the yard and across the road to see if the snow had disappeared enough to walk down to the creek.
We just started the walk when I heard the tweet of a robin. I looked over to the pile of wood and there was a robin sitting on the wood and tweeting at me.
He was excited and tweet and tweeted with wings moving up and down. What a greeting!
Was this Mr. Robin Redbreast? Had he returned? I hadn’t seen my solitary robin last spring and figured he had died as he was at least 9 years old.
He was a robin I wrote about who stayed around all winter one year waiting for a mate that I had found dead in the hedge. When I saw the dead robin there wasn’t a mark on her and I didn’t have any idea of why she was dead. Mr Robin Redbreast, had no idea she was dead. He was waiting for her to return and was not going South without her.
What do you feed a robin? Mostly I saw them patrolling the yard and eating earthworms pulled out of the ground. The ground was frozen and covered with snow. Mr. Robin Redbreast stayed in the apple tree close to the house. I feed him cut up apples and he ate some of the food I left outside for the blue jays.
Somehow he survived that winter in Eastern Canada and went South the next winter returning every Spring except last year. Mr. Robin Redbreast was always by himself while I saw other robins in pairs.
Going across the road to the creek, I see the trees were holding the snow and it was still a lot in the forest.
Green moss sticking it’s head out of the snow.
Coming back to the house I see a Captain Morgan rum bottle, in the ditch, someone must have thrown out of their car. I hope they didn’t drink it all while driving!
Not only the rum bottle coming out of the snow now but a couple paper coffee cups and fast food wrappings were littering the ditch. Hubby and I picked them up and put them in the proper recycle containers.
Even with all the great recycling system in place here on the Island, some people still like to litter and have others pick up their mess.
View of the house from the road. There is still snow where it was snowblown in piles.
A nice moss covered boulder by the house.
It was great to get some fresh air and eventually I went back into the house to make a pizza.
Pepperoni and cheese pizza ready to pop into the oven.
While I was putting the pizza together, Mr. Robin Redbreast was by the back deck. I’m sure it is him as he always had one wing that hung down and he was by himself.
