Eduardo Pimentel, tatuador profesional radicado en Cuautitlán Izcalli, Estado de México, menciona que “un tatuaje se convierte en obra de arte cuando los trazos y el resultado final son únicos en lo que se plasmó, sin guía, sin bocetos, sin planear nada. Sólo la idea acordada entre el portador y el tatuador”.
“Si una persona pretende que sus tatuajes sean arte, entonces lo son”, según Cristian Petru Panaite, asistente de curaduría de la Sociedad Histórica de Nueva York (NYHS). Nos enfrentamos a dos visiones opuestas que sirven como planteamiento para saber en qué punto un tatuaje, por muy sencillo o complejo que sea en su ejecución, se convierte en arte.

Hace referencia al sentimiento puramente subjetivo del portador: si para él su diseño responde a una necesidad de llevar impregnado en la piel una imagen que represente un acontecimiento importante en su vida, eso será suficiente para ser considerado como una obra.

Otro aspecto a considerar sería la procedencia del tatuaje, es decir, el artista que lo ha realizado. En la actualidad, los tatuadores se miden por nivel de popularidad gracias a la confección de una obra única que se distinga del resto. Cuando son identificables por sus diseños se les considera verdaderos artistas. Por lo tanto, cada trabajo que nazca de su mano y lleve su propio sello será considerado en automático como obra de arte.
