When I visited southern Venezuela, specifically the Bolivar state, the largest in the country, I was impressed with several great infrastructure works that it has, such as suspension bridges.
En mi anterior publicación, click acá si quieren leerla (@sofathana/esp-eng-superestructuras-de-venezuela-puente-angostura-venezuela-superstructures-angostura-bridge) les hablé sobre el Puente Angostura, el primero construido sobre el río más grande de Venezuela, el Orinoco, y en esta oportunidad los invito a conocer el segundo puente levantado sobre este río, llamado Orinoquia.
In my previous post, click here if you want to read it (@sofathana/esp-eng-superestructuras-de-venezuela-puente-angostura-venezuela-superstructures-angostura-bridge) I spoke to you about the Angostura Bridge, the first built over the largest river in Venezuela, the Orinoco, and this time I invite you to visit the second bridge built over this river, called Orinoquia.
Viajé a esta región del país para visitar a mi tío que en ese momento vivía en Ciudad Bolívar y él me llevó a varios sitios emblemáticos de allí y de la ciudad de Puerto Ordaz, tanto naturales como construidos por los humanos, el Puente Orinoquia es uno de ellos.
I traveled to this region of the country to visit my uncle who at that time lived in Ciudad Bolívar and he took me to several emblematic sites there and in the city of Puerto Ordaz, both natural and human-made, the Orinoquia Bridge is one of them.
Llegué en un vuelo desde Caracas a la ciudad de Puerto Ordaz y había acordado con mi tío que nos íbamos a encontrar en el parque La Llovizna. Después de recorrer este hermoso lugar con cascadas y bosques y visitar también el Ecomuseo del Caroní, nos fuimos rumbo a Ciudad Bolívar.
I arrived on a flight from Caracas to the city of Puerto Ordaz and had agreed with my uncle that we were going to meet at La Llovizna Park. After touring this beautiful place with waterfalls and forests and also visiting the Caroní Ecomuseum, we left for Ciudad Bolívar.
Ya eran más de las cuatro de la tarde, hacía calor e iba en el viejo LTD de mi tío con la ventana abierta y disfrutando de la brisa y de ese paisaje desconocido para mí hasta ese momento.
It was already after four in the afternoon, it was hot and I was going in my uncle's old LTD with the window open and enjoying the breeze and the landscape unknown to me until then.
De repente apareció por nuestro lado izquierdo, a lo lejos aún, una gran estructura, ¿y eso? Le pregunté a mi tío, “es el Puente Orinoquia”, me dijo, “vamos a cruzarlo de ida y vuelta”.
Suddenly a large structure appeared on our left side, still far away, and that? I asked my uncle, "It's the Orinoquia Bridge," he said, "we're going to cross it back and forth."
¡Siiií! Había pensado que ya íbamos a Ciudad Bolívar, pero no, antes fuimos a contemplar de cerca esta superestructura inaugurada el 13 de noviembre de 2006 y que une cerca de la ciudad de Puerto Ordaz a los estados Bolívar y Anzoátegui, convirtiéndose en la segunda conexión vial entre los estados del norte y el sur de Venezuela sobre el río Orinoco.
Yeah! I'd thought that we were already going to Ciudad Bolívar, but no, before we went to take a close look at this superstructure inaugurated on November 13, 2006 and which unites the states of Bolívar and Anzoátegui near the city of Puerto Ordaz, becoming the second road connection between the northern states and the south of Venezuela over the Orinoco River.

The sky was clear, so the contrast of blue with the gray and white structure favored the images.
Siempre me ha gustado la arquitectura y me impresiona ver en vivo y directo obras de tanta envergadura que te hacen preguntarte cómo es posible que sean construidas.
I've always liked architecture and I am impressed to see live and direct works of such magnitude that make you wonder how it is possible that they are built.
De manera que luego me puse a investigar en Internet sobre este puente y conseguí que fue diseñado por el ingeniero Paul Lustgarten, el mismo que dirigió la construcción del Puente Angostura, inaugurado en 1967.
So then I started to investigate this bridge on the Internet and got that it was designed by the engineer Paul Lustgarten, the same one who directed the construction of the Angostura Bridge, inaugurated in 1967.
Leí además que este proyecto no era nuevo, desde 1966 la Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG), encargada de la explotación minera y forestal para el desarrollo industrial e hidroeléctrico del país, había hecho los primeros estudios para ver la factibilidad de hacer un puente en ese tramo del río Orinoco, cerca de Puerto Ordaz.
I also read that this project was not new, since 1966 the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG), in charge of mining and forestry for the industrial and hydroelectric development of the country, had made the first studies to see the feasibility of building a bridge in that section of the Orinoco river, near Puerto Ordaz.
El Puente Orinoquia comenzó a construirse en el año 2001 entre los sectores Cerro Guarampo (Anzoátegui) y La Ceiba (Bolívar) con financiamiento y coordinación de la CVG. La obra, que empleó a unos 3 mil trabajadores, fue ejecutada por la empresa brasileña Odebrecht y el Ministerio de Infraestructura de Venezuela.
The Orinoquia Bridge began construction in 2001 between the Cerro Guarampo (Anzoátegui) and La Ceiba (Bolívar) sectors, with financing and coordination by CVG. The work, which employed around 3,000 workers, was carried out by the Brazilian company Odebrecht and the Venezuelan Ministry of Infrastructure.
La longitud de este puente atirantado de hormigón y acero es de 3156 metros y el ancho es de 24,70 metros. En su parte central está sostenido por cuatro torres en forma de H hechas de concreto armado que tienen 120 metros de altura, de allí salen los tirantes de acero que son los que aguantan la plataforma central.
The length of this concrete and steel cable-stayed bridge is 3156 meters and the width is 24.70 meters. In its central part it is supported by four H-shaped towers made of reinforced concrete that are 120 meters high, from there come the steel braces that are the ones that support the central platform.
Cuando uno va pasando por debajo de esas enormes torres, el efecto óptico que resulta de ver los tirantes de acero al ir en movimiento es genial.
When you go underneath those huge towers, the optical effect that results from seeing the steel braces while moving is great.
El Puente Orinoquia, bautizado así como homenaje a la voz indígena que identifica toda esta zona llena de cauces que vierten sus aguas en el río más grande de Venezuela, el Orinoco, tiene cuatro canales para los vehículos y una vía ferrea en el medio, siendo así un sistema vial mixto.
The Orinoquia Bridge, named after the indigenous voice that identifies this entire area full of channels that pour its waters into the largest river in Venezuela, the Orinoco, has four channels for vehicles and a railroad in the middle, being thus a mixed road system.
Aunque el tramo ferroviario aún no está en funcionamiento, la idea es que sea un enlace hacia el sur con la vía ferrominera de Ciudad Piar y hacia el norte con la red nacional de trenes, de manera que se facilite la circulación de productos de las empresas básicas ubicadas en Bolívar hacia todo el país y al exterior a menor costo y distancia.
Although the railway section is not yet in operation, the idea is for it to be a link with the southern and northern railroads, so as to facilitate the circulation of products of basic companies located in Bolívar to the whole country and abroad at a lower cost and distance.
Considerada la obra de ingeniería más importante de los últimos años en Venezuela, la ejecución del Puente Orinoquia implicó también la construcción de nuevas vías, en total 166 km entre varios distribuidores y nuevas carreteras que hicieron posible la conexión de los estados Bolívar, Monagas y Anzoátegui. En consecuencia el sur del país mejoró en capacidad para hacer llegar sus productos a otras regiones.
Considered the most important engineering work in recent years in Venezuela, the execution of the Orinoquia Bridge also involved the construction of new roads, a total of 166 km between various distributors and new roads that made possible the connection of the Bolívar, Monagas and Anzoátegui states. Anteriormente para llegar al estado Bolívar desde el norte del país había que ir hasta el Puente Angostura, que te lleva a Ciudad Bolívar, su capital y luego para ir a otros destinos como Puerto Ordaz o San Félix, había que rodar una hora y media más. Con este segundo puente sobre el Orinoco se acortaron los tiempos de viaje para esa zona.
Previously, to get to Bolívar state from the north of the country, you had to go to the Angostura Bridge, which takes you to Ciudad Bolívar, its capital, and then to go to other destinations such as Puerto Ordaz or San Félix, you had to drive an hour and a half more. With this second bridge over the Orinoco, travel times for that area were shortened.
El turismo también se benefició con la inauguración de este puente, mucha gente lo visita por lo imponente que es y además ha servido para que muchos más venezolanos se desplacen hacia la Gran Sabana y muchos brasileños crucen la frontera del estado Bolívar para llegar a las playas del norte del país, al Caribe.
Tourism also benefited from the inauguration of this bridge, many people visit it for how impressive it is and it has also served for many more Venezuelans to travel to the Gran Sabana and many Brazilians cross the border of the Bolívar state to reach the beaches of the north of the country, to the Caribbean.
Mi tío me dijo que de noche también luce espectacular por la iluminación que posee, aunque no lo pude ver a esas horas, imaginé que seguro es así.
My uncle told me that at night it also looks spectacular because of the lighting it has, although I could not see it at that time, I imagined that it is for sure.
Me enteré también que el tercer puente sobre el río Orinoco, conocido como Puente Mercosur, está en construcción hace algunos años y unirá al estado Guárico (centro de Venezuela), a la altura de Cabruta, con Caicara del Orinoco en Bolívar. Tendrá 11,10 km de longitud y dos pisos, el superior para el paso vehicular y el inferior para ferrocarriles de carga. Sin duda será igual o más espectacular que los dos existentes y espero ir a visitarlo cuando esté listo.
I also found out that the third bridge over the Orinoco River, known as Mercosur Bridge, is under construction and will link the Guárico state (central Venezuela), at the height of Cabruta, with Caicara del Orinoco in Bolívar. It will be 11.10 km long and two floors, the upper one for vehicular passage and the lower one for freight railways. It will undoubtedly be the same or more spectacular than the two existing ones and I hope to visit it when it is ready.
