I recently saw the biopic The Dirt, about the Hard Rock band Mötley Crüe, and thought it would be fun to do an illustration based on it.
This time he decided not to do cartoons, opting instead for an 80s-style road sign that would go perfectly with the retro look.
Recientemente vi la película biográfica The Dirt, sobre la banda de Hard Rock Mötley Crüe y pensé que sería divertido hacer una ilustración en base a ello.
Esta vez decidí no hacer caricaturas, y opté más bien por un letrero de carretera de estilo ochentero que quedaría perfecto con la apariencia retro.
It's the first time I've made neon tubes and... it's not bad, but it could have been better. However, it turned out pretty good. The rest of the details did remain as I wanted; the color halftone, and plate print border are great for adding character to these illustrations.
Es la primera vez que hago tubos de neon y... no está mal, pero pudo haber sido mejor. Sin embargo, quedó bastante bien. El resto de los detalles sí quedó como quería; el semitono de color, y el borde de impresión de placa son fenomenales para darle personalidad a estas ilustraciones.

As always, I started with a fairly rough pencil sketch. I took a photograph and uploaded it to Illustrator. With the Pen tool I outlined the entire outline of the drawing with a black color throughout the illustration. If you're wondering, yes, I'm doing all this work from my computer and with a mouse, so it's easier for me to outline with the Pen and not the Brush.
Como siempre, comencé con un boceto bastante tosco hecho a lápiz. Tomé una fotografía y la cargué en Illustrator. Con la herramienta Pluma delineé todo el contorno del dibujo con un color negro en toda la ilustración. Si se lo preguntan, sí, estoy haciendo todo este trabajo desde mi computador y con un mouse, por ello, me es más fácil delinear con la Pluma y no con el Pincel.
Once I added the colors and details with the dot pattern, the result was already pretty good for a flat vector shape.
I exported the file to Photoshop to give it that retro feel I wanted. I distorted the smooth lines a bit and gave it that color halftone (the dots in the background). I created the white border to simulate the color glide effect, and the solid black border around the entire image. Lastly, I used a concrete texture set to Screen blending mode, and an old leaf texture on top of the entire work.
The final results depend entirely on your imagination and inventiveness. Practice is the best way to progress until you reach a style that you feel comfortable working with, and above all, that you enjoy doing.

Una vez que agregué los colores y los detalles con el patrón de puntos, el resultado ya era bastante bueno de una forma vectorial plana.
Exporté el archivo a Photoshop para darle ese toque retro que quería. Distorsioné un poco las líneas lisas y le di ese semitono de color (los puntitos del fondo). Creé el borde blanco para simular el efecto de desliz de color, y el borde negro sólido alrededor de toda la imagen. Por último, usé una textura de concreto en modo de fusión Trama, y una textura de hoja vieja encima de el trabajo completo.
Los resultados finales dependen completamente de tu imaginación e inventiva. La práctica es la mejor manera de avanzar hasta alcanzar un estilo en el que nos sintamos cómodos trabajando, y sobre todo, que disfrutemos de hacer.
