Every now and then, we find something that's really worth doing. It could be an opportunity to level up our skills like becoming a better communicator or something seemingly simple like cooking a great meal at a family gathering.
But we oftentimes end up under delivering on the task with mediocre results. I just experienced one recently and I'm still wondering why I did that.
In a nutshell, the phrase on the title encourages us to put our full effort into any endeavor that we choose to pursue, that if a task is deemed important enough to be undertaken, it should be executed to the best of our ability.
I've noticed countless times already that the quality of the results achieved is usually directly proportional to the amount of effort and attention that one puts into the task at hand.
For example, a student's half-hearted work on doing an assignment will more than likely result in a poor grade.
Why Do Something That's Worth Doing Half-heartedly?
I think there's no one answer for it. It could be a number of reasons. In my case, I was simply unprepared but looking back, it's a lame excuse because I should have come prepared since it was worth it.
Other possible reasons are a lack of motivation, confidence, focus, or not enough interest on the task at hand. Despite it worth doing, the pull to not do a great work is always greater than the push to do a great work. Hence, mediocre results.
However, there's superiority in doing great work and we ought to strive to do it(great work) even on days we may not feel like doing it. For one, doing something well leads to greater success, which means a potentially bigger reward. And a sense of satisfaction in the outcome.
While half-heartedly work is more likely to lead to unwelcomed consequences and a sense of dissatisfaction. It could also be a waste of time and energy.
The concept can be applied to many aspects of life, including work, relationships, and personal pursuits. And for me, It's a reminder to take pride and put ourselves into what we do, approaching every task with a positive attitude, and to strive for excellence in everything we undertake.
Yes, it sounds a bit idealistic because there will be many times in which positivity and the desire to strive for excellence will be on vacation. However, the alternative of winging it doesn't seem realistic in my opinion.
Conclusion
When all is said and done, I believe that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well because the effort we put in will pay off handsomely in the long run.
Whether that be through personal growth, professional success, or simply a sense of pride in a job well done like cooking a great meal at a family gathering.
