Let's continue our tour through Konstanz!
This is the third part of this mini series and this time we'll focus on the island of Mainau which is located just outside of Konstanz.
To get there you can take the boat or drive to a parking place and walk over a pier to the island. I took the former and this is where you'll dock if you take a boat as well.
Just above the harbor is a castle (in a Baroque style) which you can walk to. It's located on a little hill (the only one on the island) but you'll get rewarded with a splendid view. There is a large yard there with flowers that vary from season to season. As it is spring now we saw a lot of tulips with gorgeous colors. The castle itself also has a church which you can look at from the inside.
On top of this hill you'll find a beautiful garden with large and special trees. Although the flowers are mainly near the shoreline you'll encounter sequoias and cherry trees here. I really like how every part of the island has something special to showcase. I couldn't believe that the sequoias here were only about 140 years old and were already so big.
It's hard to get a sense of scale from the pictures, but I saw one family with 3 kids trying to encircle it with their hands together and they couldn't even closely make it. There were probably still 8 or 9 children missing :D
Now for the main attraction: flowers! As mentioned the shoreline harbors the main installment of all varying kinds of flowers. In spring, of course, you'll mainly encounter tulips and daffodils. One place had an even wider selection with the whole color palette. They also often have some animals made out of flowers like the peacock or ducks you can see here below.
One cool idea they had was to recreate the lake Konstanz with flowers. The blue is the water and the signs are the cities located around it. With the sun shining on it and still some fresh morning dew it was a special sight to behold that gets lost when taking a picture. But I hope you still get the idea ;)
While it is a bit pricy (about 24โฌ per person), I would still recommend coming here as one can easily stay whole day here walking through this almost endless park with many different things to see. There are also restaurants and cafes here, so don't worry about food and beverages :)
