This is the continuation of the Social Lens series. I hope you enjoy it
Why 'Social Lens'?
It is called Social, because I am interested in everything related to humanity, how people live and act, what we do consciously and unconsciously, how we effect the world around us and treat one another.
Lens in this context refers to -- wait for it -- the lens of the camera I will be using to take the pictures of what I am seeing (that at least is pretty obvious...), but it also refers to my viewpoint - everything I watch and see is observed through my eyes. There isn't really a way around that of course, and as long as one is aware of that it shouldn't be much of a problem. After all, life is experienced individually and every point of view can add to the greater whole.
I just came back home from shopping and while being there I had to stop to take this picture
I just had this feeling that I had to write about it because I could feel some meaning in this social situation. It's a feeling that is hard to describe, but I think (and hope) that i am not alone in feeling it. Do you feel it? Have a look at this picture. What do you feel?
It's one of those moments when you can feel some deeper meaning, although it might first be hard to verbalize it. I could feel that man's stare, his gaze looking at me and everyone else. This look that is new to a society that has forgotten being looked at in this way. It might not be strange to you, depending on where you live, but here it's something that I hope we haven't gotten used to. It's a feeling of being watched, a look that teaches obedience. The eyes protruding out of that unhumanly masked face. And it is a look that conditions yourself to behave in an obedient way. It is happening every day now when you are in society when the police drive around in their cars and when they look at you when they walk past you. It is causing your brain to slowly but surely change your state of being. It is literally reprogramming you. But are you aware of it?
It is that subtlety that changes us as a society as we are not aware of the changes that are taking place over longer periods of time. It is a way of using power to change people's behavior without the majority noticing it. And the people who are in the role of the watcher are perhaps even less aware of their influence that they have on society. They are just a part in the whole that is changing in a direction towards more control, sterility, distance and ultimately in-humaneness.
Am I being over dramatic? Probably. But how else will people become aware of what could potentially unfold and what is taking place currently? One has to use one's mind to notice these things and to be able to question conventions, patterns and normality. Especially in these times when it is too easy to go with the flow.
Note: If the picture(s) in this post depicts yourself or someone you know and you want it removed, please let me know and I will remove it. As street photography is considered to be an art form in my country it enables artists to publish pictures of people in public places.
