We are now in the third week of this SGL-Solidarity initiative and on this occasion I wanted to return to Venezuelan music and the use of Venezuelan cuatro.
In 1975, when my family and I had just returned from our long stay in Germany and Russia, I became very popular in the neighborhood where I lived by playing instruments and singing. This song was sung by one of the frineds who was always at those meetings we had and I learned it since then. However, even though I knew that the song was Venezuelan, I never knew whose it was. But it struck me that the rhythm was closer to salsa than to Venezuelan music.
Today, with a view to this recording, I did the research and found out that it is by a well-known Venezuelan author, José Reyna, and that the song was recorded by Nelson Pinedo with the Cuban group La Sonora Matancera, one of the best known groups of the 50's in tropical music. They, apart from Cuban music, popularized several Venezuelan songs, since Venezuela was one of the main consumers of that music that gave birth to salsa.

Ya llegamos a la tercera semana de esta iniciativa del SGL-Solidarity y ene sta ocasión quise volver a la música venezolana y al uso del cuatro venezolano.
En el año 1975, cuando mi familia y yo apenas regresamos de nuestra larga estadía en Alemania y Rusia, yo me hice muy popular en el barrio donde vivía por el hecho de tocar instrumentos y cantar. Esta canción la cantaba uno de los que estaba siempre en esas reuniones que hacíamos y me la aprendí desde entonces. Sin embargo, aunque sabía que la canción era venezolana, nunca supe de quién era. Pero me llamaba la atención que el ritmo era más cerca de la salsa que de la música venezolana.
Hoy, con miras a esta grabación, hice la investigación y descubrí que se trata de una autor venezolano muy conocido, José Reyna, y que la canción fue grabada por Nelson Pinedo con la agrupación cubana La Sonora Matancera, uno de los grupos más conocidos de los años 50 en música tropical. Ellos, aparte de la música cubana, popularizaron varias canciones venezolanas, pues Venezuela era uno de los principales consumidores de esa música que dio pie al nacimiento de la salsa.
