My visit to the garden to take some scent leaf (also known as African Basil) coincided with the visit of a beautiful, large yellow caterpillar. It's colourful with some bluish or greenish stripes, and it has a tail horn.
Clinging to a branch of the scent leaf tree, I was shocked to see it had a full feast before I arrived, leaving a few leaves for me to cook with. You can see how dry the tree is.
I thought all these garden visitors eat a little of the plants and leave. But this beautiful yellow caterpillar ate to its satisfaction.
After admiring the large yellow caterpillar in wonder, I was curious to know its name, and using Google Lens, I found out that this beautiful, colourful caterpillar is the larva of the Death's-head Hawk-moth, whose scientific name is Acherontia atropos.
I browsed further to learn what the adult moth looks like, and I discovered that the head truly bears the mark of a human skull. Wow! Just wow!
I finally left the garden without taking any scent leaves.
So, have you seen this caterpillar before? It's beautiful. Isn't it?
Cheers. 🥂
