In my town of Akanu Ohafia in Abia State, we have so many traditional traditions that help us keep the environment clean and sustainable. One of the most important practices is our collective cleaning days, when everyone comes together to clean the streets, marketplaces, and common areas. This not only ensures cleanliness, but also develops a sense of community and pride in our village. We also practise domestic trash segregation, which involves sorting organic waste for composting and recycling things such as plastics and metals.
This minimises the quantity of rubbish that ends up in landfills or pollutes our environment. Furthermore, cultural standards teach us to value natural resources. We have designated areas for cultivation and grazing to avoid overexploitation and soil degradation. Our cultural standards teach us to value natural resources. We have designated areas for cultivation and grazing to avoid overexploitation and soil degradation. Our elders pass down knowledge about sustainable agriculture, emphasising crop rotation and organic farming methods that preserve soil health.
We employ natural resources for construction and home things, which reduces the environmental impact of contemporary materials.
These traditional customs not only keep our village clean, but they also ensure that we live in harmony with our environment, protecting them for future generations.
STAY SAFE ✌️
