Today, I worked on the old chicken barn in preparation for adding quail. I think quail will be better because they grow faster and are ready for market sooner. Also, quail are very quite birds
Step 1: We poured a new concrete floor
The quail will be in self contained units, but I wanted a concrete floor for easy clean up. We sloped the floor to one corner and added a drain in the that corner. This way, we can wash the building very quickly.
Step 2: Added electrical
We added electrical and lights. Quail stop laying eggs if the days become too short. Lights will extend the egg production into the winter months. Also, we needed electricity because we want to incubate eggs and we need heat in the brooder for baby chicks.
Step 3 Ventilation and Natural Light
We added windows on each end of the building so there's air movement. Also, the roof is high peak so heat goes up instead of staying in the house. We added two skylight panels for natural light, but we might have to cover these if the sun is too hot.
Step 4: Ready for birds!
The building is ready for birds. we added screens on the windows and a strong door. There are lots of foxes and other predators, so we need to keep them out! I will work on cages next week and then purchase quail. All photos and information are by Sirclucksalot
