I find photo contests and challenges so much fun! So here's my entry to #POBphotocontest initiated by .
The theme for this week is technology.
This is a jetmatic pump. It is a type of shallow well pump used to collect water through manual operation to move groundwater from the aquifer up to the surface. This is a photo of a jetmatic pump we have at home.
Jetmatic pump is still common in our place though many have switched to water pumps that is powered by electricity and some have subscribed to water utility companies. In our home we both have the motor pump and the jetmatic pump.
So why did I highlight this not so high end technology anymore? High technology really make life so easy. With electricity that run motor pumps I do not need to manually pump the ground water to the surface. It is time efficient and physically not tiring. But based on my experience, technology is no match when mother nature unleashes its wrath. We live in this part of the Philippines where typhoons are so destructive and earthquakes are common. We experienced the two strongest typhoon here, Supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan) and the recent one Supertyphoon Odette (Rai). The aftermath of these supeRtyphoons leave us with so much destruction. And with that, for weeks, there was no electricity. When there is no electricity, everything seems to stop and become useless. All these hi tech gadgets and appliances become useless. Companies cannot supply water anymore and motor pumps can not run.
So where do we get water? We get our water supply from this not so high tech jetmatic pump. This is literally our life saver. Water is very important. You can live for many days without food but not water. When there is no electricity many of our neighbors would come to our house to fetch water from this pump. Even my husband who worked in the city when Supertyphoon Odette hit, went home immediately because life was so hard there without water. Most of the people in the city do not use this jetmatic pump anymore. Who would have thought that this technology is still very useful and important especially in times of crisis. That is why I appreciate this technology so much. Whoever invented this is a hero for me.
