I looked at my wrist watch and realized that I have been standing here for 10minutes. I couldn't get myself to knock on the door. I don't know their reaction when they see me now, after 4 years of no calls and no text.
I finally got myself to knock.
"Who is there?"
The ever sweet and charming voice of my mom echoed from the other side of the door.
She Opened the door and just stood there like someone who got paralyzed on the spot.
"Honey, who was that on the door?"
My dad asked from inside.
"Come See for yourself, it seems Christmas came early."
I saw dad approach the entrance of the house.
"Oh my! Uchechukwugaeme!"
He exclaimed my native name in full. The surprise in his eyes were overwhelming.
"Greetings dad
Greetings mom"
"Come here my son."
My Mom said dragging me to her bosom with tears in her eyes.
"You broke my heart my son."
[Permit Me To fast forward a bit. Things got really emotional here.]
It was evening and my mother with the help of my kid sister prepared my favorite meal.
"Pounded yam with Nsala soup😋"
We gathered at the dining table and enjoyed the meal together as a family. After the meal we sat down and had a long discussion.
"Dad, Mom I have a letter for you. Pardon me for using a letter, there are somethings here that i can't say looking at your faces."
"Faye, go and get me my reading glasses."
being the last born was my only sibling still staying with my parents.
"Don't worry dad I'll read the letter Out."
She replied.
My dad always enjoyed hearing my kid sister read. Well who wouldn't, she read with such a beautiful voice and lovely intonation.
"Alright go ahead."
Dad said.
"DEAR DAD AND MOM,
Hi dad! Hi Mom ! I greet you both with a warm kiss.
How have you all been? It's been roughly four years since you heard from me. I have no excuse for that, it was really selfish of me and I am really sorry.
Dad how is your health? Do you still have to take medicine everyday of your life? Mom how is your eye sight? I hope you would recognize me when you get to see me.
Dad How is the family business? I hope the business has grown and expanded as you promised it would. Have you completed the project you embarked on in the village? Mom how is life treating you as a barrister? Do you have retirement plans, or do you still desire to become a judge?
Dad I miss those days when I'd follow you to your workplace everyday and work for you and get paid. I miss those days when we would all go to the farm together. I miss those days when we would celebrate special festivals and all eat from one plate. I miss those days when we would go for Christmas shopping together and you will get everybody a gift.
Dad! Mom! I have never gotten the chance to truly appreciate you both for all you have done in my life. For bringing me into the world. For caring and providing from my day 1 on earth. Dad I remember those days you would go to work under the rain, just to make sure there's always food on the table. Mom I remember when you would take double jobs. With me strapped on your back, you would teach so many classes. I watched you cry and complain of too much stress, but back then my tiny hands couldn't wipe your tears. Dad there have never been a day you turned me down when I run to you seeking help. Mom! Dad! Thank you so much.
Dad I want to let you know that I put every advice you gave me into practice. You taught me that the first property to own as a man was a bed, a stove and a pot. You taught me that I should never gamble or play "Get rich quick" games and ponzies. You taught me that I should beware of women. You taught me that I shouldn't eat outside [ Dad I must confess, this is the only one I have a problem keeping to, but then I don't eat carelessly]. Dad the truth is that your advice are the reason I have gotten to where I am today.
I am truly sorry for taking you both for granted some years back. For leaving the house without saying goodbye. For staying away for so long without checking up on you. For making it seem like I abandoned you. I am truly sorry..."
"Stop, I can't take this anymore."
Mom said crying. She couldn't help it. I looked at my dad and noticed that he had tears in his eyes also.
[A little fast forward]
Sleeping in my old room brought back so many memories. After breakfast, I approached my parents.
"Dad, Mom, In The Spirit Of Christmas And As A token of my appreciation, I want to fulfill as many of your bucket list as I can."
"Son you don't need to get us buckets, I think we have enough in the house already."
Dad replied.
"Ancient Man," Mom teased "bucket list are things you'd love to do before you die."
We all laughed.
"Now that would be a very long list son, but I'll make it as short as possible."
"I have always wanted to spend one whole day on an airplane.
Always wanted to take A trip on a ship.
Always wanted to kiss my wife at Tupai Atoll, French Polynesia France.
I've always wanted to visit space and dance on the moon if possible.
I've always wanted to visit heaven"
"Now going to heaven shouldn't be A bucket list, because you can only do that after kicking the bucket."
Mom said with a lovely smile on her face.
"Mom what of your bucket list?"
I asked
"He is mine and I am his. We are one, therefore his bucket list is my bucket list as well."
"Now isn't that romantic."
I said smiling
I spent the next few days ticking off Dad's bucket list.
First I chartered a private plane and booked a flight for them from Nigeria To Canada [12hours flight] and booked another flight from Canada to France[8 hours flight]. I couldn't give him 24hours on a plane, but then 20 hours should count for something.
Then in France, they would take a trip to the Most Romantic Island On Earth. Tupai Atoll, French Polynesia
[I couldn't find a free image that truly describes the beauty of this heart shaped island]
From there, they would board a ship all the way to USA. That would mean spending 3 to 4 days on a ship.
In USA, they would go to Hawthorne, California where SpaceX headquarters is Located and board a spaceship and take a trip to the moon.
My parents returned to Nigeria on the 25th of December. By then all my siblings came back from different part of the world and we had the best Christmas celebration ever in ages.
Amidst the celebration, my mom asked.
"My son how were you able to afford such a beautiful vacation. The best in my lifetime?"
"Mom, All This Is courtesy of Tiger Lily a Captain from America."
"My son you mean you know the almighty Captain America I see on TV?"
"😊Not That One Mom, but you can as well call her captain America because she is as strong and has a big heart just like captain America"
