The Longshaw Estate in Derbyshire is very beautiful, especially this time of year, with lots to explore and plenty of clearly marked walking trails. It was lovely to see the autumn colours as we walked through the woods and down to the lake.
We spotted a few trees with growths on them. The growths are called burrs and consist of shoot and bud tissue that form a growth on the tree trunk. It is unknown why this happens but most probably a reaction to stress. Source
The odd fly agaric is still about.
It's my favourite and easy to spot fungus. They are usually found in the woods, especially when it's wet.
The area was a lot more open after some old trees had been cut down and replaced with young trees.
On the estate, children can learn bushcraft skills, building shelters, connecting with nature and hopefully respecting it, while having some fun.
We always enjoy our visits, whatever the season is. There's always lots to see and the cafe isn't bad either.
