Learning to play the guitar well has always been a big dream of mine. I've pictured myself on stage playing for a crowd one day. I know I have a long way to go though, since I don't even have a guitar yet! But I'm determined to begin working toward this goal.
This week I researched which guitar is best for a complete beginner like me. I asked people I know and I read many reviews and watched numerous instructional videos to help decide. I settled on the Yamaha FG800, an acoustic guitar that gets great reviews for quality and ease of playing. I like that the acoustic guitar requires developing finger strength and precision. My plan is to save money from my job so I can purchase this guitar within the next couple months.
In addition to choosing a beginner guitar, I also started learning music theory and basic guitar skills online. There is a lot more to learn than I expected! It feels exciting but also a bit overwhelming. I'm trying to take it step-by-step. I found free video lessons for beginners that I have been going through. I make sure to practice the hand positions away from the guitar, so I'm not completely unfamiliar when I get the real instrument.
I also looked into local guitar teachers. Getting feedback from a professional will help improve my technique early on, rather than develop bad habits later. I got recommendations from some musician friends and found a couple instructors who seem really patient and encouraging. That's important to me as a beginner. I hope to schedule my first lesson soon after getting my new guitar.
I understand learning an instrument takes consistent, dedicated practice. So I planned out a daily routine, aiming for at least 30 minutes a day. I will work on chord changes, strumming patterns, finger exercises and basic songs. I created a practice journal to track my progress. It's an ambitious goal, but I have to start somewhere.
Taking these initial steps has me feeling motivated but also a bit anxious! Learning a musical instrument has always felt unattainable. But having an action plan makes it seem possible. I just need to stick to my savings plan so I can get that new guitar!
I know I have much to learn, but I believe with consistent practice I can play songs for family and friends within a year. Maybe even work up the courage for open mic night! Looking ahead 5 years, I hope to have written a few original songs. But I'm trying not to get too ahead of myself. For now, I'm focused on getting my first guitar and mastering chords and basics. I hope I can stick with it!

This turned into a long account, but it shows how eager I am to finally inch toward this dream. I'll be sure to share updates when I get my new guitar - you'll probably see many proud pictures! I'm hoping to start making musical memories very soon. I appreciate you listening to me talk through getting started on this goal. It makes me feel supported and accountable. I look forward to updating you on my guitar progress!
