The Anglo Saxons culture and way of living is one of the richest in history. Formed by a group of farmer-warriors, these people established themselves over a thousand of years ago in Britain. They were organized in tribes mostly from Europe. Specifically Three Tribes that are known as:
- Angle
- Saxons
- Jute
They are highly famous for being great warriors as farmers. Their leader is commonly the strongest warrior. They are known as the Anglo-Saxons because these two tribes were the largest.
They invaded Britain in the 4th century thanks to the Ancient Romans leaving the country. Because of these events, it was easier for them to invade and settle up. They used boats as a mean of transportation when they moved from their countries.
The name “England” comes from “Angle-Land” a saxon word, and still remains through time. They choose their town’s name by using the name of the leader, this way they would recognize who was in charge of ruling and leading. The Anglo-Saxons scattered and lived in towns which ended up turning in Five main kingdoms which are:
- Kent
- East Anglia
- Wessex
- Mercia
- Northumbria
Among their traditions they loved to celebrate and party. Of course behind a great celebration there’s always a big feast. Speaking of feasting, and as stated before, they were great farmers. They farmed their own vegetables, fruits, meat, among many edible things. As for clothing they fabricated their own by using natural materials such as wood and linen to make trousers and tunics. They built their own buildings and roads. They took advantage of natural resources to properly establish themselves. The biggest house is for the chief.
As for religion. The Anglo-Saxons christian traditions are the foundations of what it is the current christian movement. It’s curious how they evolved in this matter though as they were firstly pagans which means they worshiped several gods. A monk named Agustin persuaded the then King Ethelbert of Kent to use this religion.
The Anglo-Saxons were constantly raided and plundered by The Vikings. They even invaded and settled in York turning it into a great city. The Battle of Hastings is one of the most famous in history.
