The clan's mansion, which doubled as our headquarters, was in a bit of commotion when our chopper touched down in the field behind the ancient building. We alighted, and our matriarch's bodyguards escorted us into the mansion.
The heartbreaking news of Uncle Ai's gruesome death and that of some other members had spread like wildfire. Some council leaders flew in from neighbouring locations which meant there would be an emergency council meeting.
I was taken to the intramural clinic in the mansion for a routine checkup. Most probably to check my mental state. I laid on the hospital bed, resting, when one of my favourite teachers, Aila, visited me. She smiled widely and seemed happy to see me.
"Eliana! You've been gone for too long." She said and hugged me. I smiled back.
"How are you, Aila? I missed this place."
"We missed you more. My class is never the same without you," she chuckled.
"I'm back now," I said quietly and looked down at my hands. She understood. She interlocked her fingers with mine. I could feel her electric current flow through my veins. She comforted me the way her ability could allow her to.
"Were you there when it happened?" She asked. I shook my head. "Good. We received reports that Uncle Ai tore out his throat with his bare hands after he violated and mutilated his twin granddaughters. That is not something you should see."
I must have gone pale because Aila held my hands tighter and understood I had seen it all. That explained the blood splattered everywhere in the house when I returned from shopping. I squeezed my eyes shut.
Aila further updated me that it was believed Akita was the one behind the gruesome murders. The leaders had to decide what to do about Akita.
With the presence of some leaders in the mansion, an urgent council meeting was called. I made up my mind to put the meeting time to good use and find my cousin, Akita. I had to get to the bottom of this accusation without drawing unwanted attention. I would not be surprised if Akita was behind Uncle Ai's death, but I had to know why she would do something that cruel.
We are not cruel people, though the use of our abilities to defend ourselves especially against humans may make us appear brutal and inhuman.
I alone knew how to get through to Akita. No one would notice my absence for the duration of the meeting. I have always loved staying in the shadows, where no one would pay me any attention. I had become invisible to almost everyone except our matriarch, Inahan Elena.
I hurried upstairs, hid in one of the closets that had a vent connecting to the meeting room. Then I heard everything. The unanimous decision of the council leaders was — ELIMINATE AKITA.
