Achimota School is one of the premier high schools in the country and this has mainly to do with its history. It was started by the English during the colonial era to give some elite Africans a very formal British education. It was also a very strategic location for the British Government. This location was chosen to be the location of the British operating government in case of the fall of London during WWII. It actually even became slightly function as the place for the government in Exile during the battle for Briton when it looked like things were not good for the English.
Notably it was also the the school that Kwame Nkrumah went to and then later he studied at Lincoln University int he United States where the groundwork for the independence movement grew in him like seed. Kwame Nkrumah was the first prime minister and later first President of Ghana which was the first sub Saharan African country to gain their independence in 1957. Within 6 years he had grown the industry of Ghana to new levels with over 40 factories providing for local needs, and the longest motor way int he world during that time. He also tried to tell the world how the Vietnam issue could be solved at a UN meeting. Combined with a potential for him to pull the rug on an American aluminium deal, I guess you could see how he was not the favorite in the books of the colonialist. He was overthrown while out of the country in 1966, after a few failed assassination attempts. It is known that the MI6 and the CIA had a big roll in this.
So Achimota school has a grand reputation and has created a number of historical characters. These photos were taken in 2018 and the school seemed to be on a mission of re-branding itself in a liberal arts education sort of way with having this inaugural festival for the arts. This is progressive as the typical Ghanaian family that would send their child to this school would be betting their future on having a lawyer, doctor or some other prestigious career be the result of such a school for their child. So celebrating the arts is something new.
Since these pictures were taken though the school has been embroiled in a controversy though in the last year. They did not allow a Rastafarian child to start school after admitting him on the merits of his school records alone. When it came to appearances he did not meet the requirement which is a shaved or cropped hair for both men and women. They tangled with the wrong mon (intentional) though and he took it to the highest courts and won. The old farts of the school argued tradition, but even with tradition they have been failing to keep up in academic standards of recent times, was the counter argument.
A mural of Kwame Nkrumah on one of the school buildings.
There was a fashion show in the main field. Most of the classrooms had many exhibits, and focus talks going on.
I think that the outfits are maid from plastic waste here.
One of the featured installations was an airplane sculpture. Kind of a mystical star ship.
Some performing art troupes.
My good friend Eliplim gave a talk on being a poetry artist and painter to the inspiring young minds. I wonder how he got in the front gate with his long dreads, that outfit and his vespa baby squealing between his legs. I have created an account on here for him I am really wishing he gets his head out of his helmet and comes and shares some of his art with us.
DJ Vimtinz another friend of mine who invited me finished off the event with a party and him hitting the turn tables.
All photos were shot by me on I believe a Motorola Droid Turbo II.
