When a royal dies in Osu there will be a royal funeral. One one of the days of the royal funeral historically women would carry pots of water down from a river at the foothills to the mountains outside of Accra. These days the water is trucked in but a procession of women carry the pots of water through the township pouring some at the entrance to all the major clan houses in the town. As they walk the water sloshes and wets them. They become taken over by the spirit of the river from the water that splashes on them. Some go mad and behave erratically, each has a male member also from the shrine that holds them and guides them through the street to the next house to pour the water. Water is an important part of life everywhere but here it also contains the spirits of powerful river dieties.
