Hi everyone! As a human being, you confront yourself with both positive and negative emotions. Some emotions have their constructive role while others turn to be rather destructive.
Looking at some information about emotions, it crossed my path a quite complex article for the general public on Psychology Today
So, I decided to share with you some relevant aspects with regards to the topic of this article, Humiliation.
Regarding Humiliation, it is not a proper or justified response to others, or if it ever happens to be, that is very rare. So, we usually talk about aggressors and victims when referring to it.
As opposed to embarrassment, which is brought upon ourselves, Humiliation is brought upon us by others.
So, when feeling humiliated, our status claims that were questioned can not be easily recovered and we feel like losing our honour and dignity, we might feel stoned or speechless.
Very important, Humiliation has to be accompanied by shame and takes often the form of punishment, abuse, and oppression. We can even talk about ritual humiliations in more traditional societies that want to impose this way social order.
Humiliation doesn't necessarily have to take the form of an act of aggression or coercion. People can easily feel humiliated through more passive ways, such as being ignored, abandoned, rejected or overlooked, taken for granted or denied a certain right, being abused, used in their own interest, or betrayed.
Being humiliated is also a question of humanity, morality, and ethics, by forsaking the right of people to these proper treatments.
Humiliation can happen to any person and it might lead to a constant preoccupation or obsession with our humiliation and the perpetrators (real or imagined).
The reaction to Humiliation can be that of anger, sadism, fantasies of revenge, and even delinquency or terrorism. In case of internalising the trauma, it might lead to fear, anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks, apathy, social isolation, depression, or suicidal ideation.
It is very difficult for victims of Humiliation to defend themselves, given that anger, violence, or revenge proved to be ineffective in repairing the damage that has been done.
It is from within that individuals have to find their strength and self-esteem to come to better terms with their humiliation. However, if this thing is too hard some people even decide to abandon their life and start a new one.
