A couple of days back this crazy situation occurred at one of the Education Technology companies in one of the cities of India. The security guard locked all the employees in the premises and not allowing them to leave the premises. He was instructed to do this by one of the Supervisor. There was a lot of noise and chaos around this incident on all social media platforms. The management later released a statement saying it was an unfortunate incident and have taken action on the same.
This incident was captured on video and was circulated on various forums like LinkedIn and Facebook and hence it got so much attention and there was action taken against the company and the person. If this video had to not go viral probably there would have been no action taken and the management would have not given an apology or taken any action. This incident came to light and hence there was noise, but the truth is that on day-to-day basis there are many companies who exploit their employees in all possible ways that they can.
The fact is that most of these small-time companies do exploit their staff to the maximum. They are made to work at lower salaries and long working hours. The problem is that there are lesser jobs and more people and hence people get ready to work for any company. 2 years back I had one part time HR consulting project with one of the Indian companies based in Dubai. The company exploited their employees all the time, they were given strict instructions that till the time the project deadlines are not met they have to work extended hours, and these people would end up working 14 to 16 hours. Some of them slept in office itself. Office had made some resting arrangements. It was not right. Couple of times I raised concerns about this working condition but they gave a deaf ear. They would keep telling me it's a temporary situation, but that temporary situation would never end. I would get regular grievances about over working, less salary and unethical work conditions. I tried from my side but then I just did not feel right to work with them and quit. I could quit but majority of the people cannot do that because they needed the job and the money.
Not only small and mid-level companies but majority of the big companies also lack professionalism and work ethics, the only difference is that the big companies do compensate in some ways whereas the small companies never do that also. They feel they are not hiring employees but they are hiring slaves. Being for 20 years in HR with different companies I do understand how the management thinks at so many levels. Some exploit sophisticatedly and some ruthlessly. In the last decade some of the big companies have come up with the work life balance concepts. Thankfully those are the breathers and allow one to work with respect and integrity.
