I planted a bunch of small coniferous trees about 15 years ago.
White Pine, White Spruce, Black Spruce, Balsam Fir, Colorado Blue Spruce.
These trees will grow over 150 feet if you let them
I was thinking I could grow them as a hedge as long as I pruned the new growth each year... called candles on a pine tree.
This went well for the 1st few years but one year I forgot to trim the leader and they took off.
I could no longer reach the tops to trim and all the tree cutters in the area recommended that I do not cut the tops off.
However if these trees shoot up to 200’ eventually they will come down in a storm. On my roof.
So last summer I did the unthinkable and pruned the leaders of each tree at 20’
I noticed this spring new growth filling in the gaps in the trunk below on my Blue Spruce, and the pines are looking good with new growth on all the lower branches.
This is the top, I will trim it up this week to get the pyramidal shape back. But I think I will be able to keep these trees around 20’. Stay tuned for updates ,...
These are the White pines with the new candles I need to trim to keep them at 20’ ...
