Ethan’s POV
Nothing lasts forever.
If only I had known how true that statement had been. Maris’s parents had told her to come home early that day, and she left the ice cream store so quickly, she left her notebook. I had taken it home, planning to give it back to her the next day at school, but the next day she wasn’t even there. She wasn’t there for days.
I asked everyone. Our friends didn’t know where she went. Nor did our teacher. Finally, I asked the principal.
“Hey, uh, principal? Do you know where Maris has gone? I wanted to return her notebook to her,” I explained.
The principal nodded. “Why yes Ethan, I do know where Maris is. Her family took her out of the school system. They are moving to France.”
“France!?” I asked. My head was suddenly clouded, and my heart was beating fast. Why was Maris moving to France?” I hadn’t even got to say goodbye…or tell her how I felt.
“Yeah, her parents surprised her with the move. They think their fashion company will thrive better there. Actually, she’s supposed to be leaving the country today. She was a good kid,” I heard him say as his voice faded in the distance. I was already running down the hall.
If she was leaving today, I had to catch her before she left, To tell her how much she meant to me. I just had too.
It was the end of the day, so everyone was just leaving school. I quickly caught up to my best friends.
“Guys! Maris is moving to France!” I yelled, breathing hard.
“Wait, Maris is moving to france!? That’s real far! You think she’s moving to Paris?” asked David.
“Maris is moving to France!? Why didn’t she tell us!?” said Andrea, the only girl who was my friend besides Maris.
“From what the principal said, I don’t think she knew,” I said. “She’s leaving today! We have to get to her, though, because…”
“Because you love her?” asked David.
“Well, yeah- but also because she left her notebook, and I want to give it to her before I can’t forever!” I explained. “Even if she doesn’t like me back and I get rejected, I still want her to have her-”
“Oh please, you know she loves you back. You’ve read her notebook haven’t you?” Asked Andrea.
Everyone got quiet.
“Oops.” said Andrea after a moment.
“Wait, she loves me back!? Does it say that in her notebook!? I flipped through sketches until I found the last page written on. In all capital letters, it read, I LOVE ETHAN THOMAS <3.
I smiled warmly, while my friends stared at me.
“What!?” I said sweatily.
“You know what,” replied David.
“Anyway, I can see you’ve got stuff to talk to Maris about, and if her flight leaves today, we’ve got to get to her before she leaves.” said Dorian, who had been quiet until this moment. “Alright everyone, let’s all get into my jeep, we’ve got a plane to catch!”
