The “Big Beautiful Bill” is a big Republican plan that includes extending Trump-era tax cuts, increasing defence spending, adding new Medicaid work rules, cutting clean energy incentives, and changing some gun laws. The House passed its version in May, and now the Senate is trying to pass its version before a July 4 deadline and work out the differences.
This bill is an important test for Republicans because they have a small majority in Congress. The Congressional Budget Office says the plan could add $3.4 trillion to the national debt over 10 years, which worries some people. Changes to Medicaid and cuts to provider taxes are especially worrying in some Republican-led states.
The bill faces problems with Senate rules. A Senate official said some parts, like limiting judges’ power, can’t pass without more votes. This is hard for Republicans because they don’t have enough votes to meet that requirement. Also, cutting clean energy credits and loosening gun laws have caused disagreements and might be taken out.
Republicans are divided. Some want bigger spending cuts and to reduce the deficit more, while others don’t like the Medicaid changes or tax limits. These fights, along with Senate rules, make it unclear if the bill will pass. Senate leaders want to move fast, but it’s uncertain if they can finish before the July 4 deadline.
