this is my contribution to FungiFriday by ewkaw
Agaricus augustus is the Prince of mushrooms to English speakers
but here in Norway we refer to it as 'kongesjampignon', the king champignon
the title is fitting, this is a true gem among edible fungi
luckiy for us it is fairly common in the parks here
growing in the grass under the trees
and even better, they grow in groups
they have a distinct aroma like almonds or bitter almonds and that taste is part of what makes them a real treat
with the scaly cap they are easy enough to identify
the gills are white when young but turn a dark chocolate brown with age
so count your blessings when you find these
and know that you are in the presence of royalty
