this is my contribution to #FungiFriday by with the theme color brown
the other day i came across a large group of inky cap fungi
Coprinopsis atramentaria growing in the grass by some trees.
they were all different ages growing together
these are edible but are poisonous when consumed with alcohol, even if the alcohol is drunk days later so among the folks i know they are rarely picked for eating
as they get older they begin to deliquesce, that is they turn into a black goo, like ink. first at the tips but soon thereafter the whole cap. "As autodigestion takes place, the cap and gills change into a black, gooey liquid. The spores aren't digested, however. They are released in the liquid" which is spread by insects or the wind

in fact it can be used as ink.
"To turn them into ink, place the mushrooms onto a saucer and store at room temperature for a few days ... the mushroom disintegrates and become ink. If you want to keep the ink, pour it into a bottle and add a preservative, one part of formalin to twenty of the ink".

ink cap mushrooms won't stay fresh so if you do pick them take only the youngest and cook them very soon afterwards. and remember not to drink alcohol for up to one week
