I took a walk down Hollywood Boulevard for this #fungifriday by
Look at all these big name celebrities with their name on a star. Just kidding these are earth stars from the family Geastraceae.
This is the most I've ever seen growing together. They seem to be everywhere this year. Maybe the cooler summer and consistent rains are beneficial to their mycelium.
I took a while to look for a pristine one. Most are in various stages of decay or are sporring. I think rotted one in the upper left looks kind of like Ron Perlman and I can't tell which ones are Dolly Parton...
This one seems to have inverted and has grabbed a bunch of soil along with it. Perhaps this one is Mickey Rouke after his latest surgery...
Here was one of the better looking ones. It still has the ball intact and there is no hole yet so it probably still is solid white inside. Perhaps this star only did some slight botox injections rather than a full blown face lift.
The color on this one was also very tan sort of like skin, maybe this star got some tips from the Kardashians. Sometimes when these dry out the star portion will fold into itself and the ball forms legs. So far I haven't been able to find one like this but it looks hilarious like a little person walking around with a round head.
Nearby I found a strange creature that stank badly.
This is a stinkhorn with the Latin name Phallus ravenelii.
These smell really putrid and they use this as a way to distribute spores. As you can see there is a little fly on the cap that is attracted by the nasty smell. Later on the fly will land elsewhere and distribute the spores to random places.
That's my trip to hollywood boulevard in the forest happy #fungifriday
