Nature has so many surprises! I've been searching for fungi recently and hardly found any. Today, I realized that the tree crusts I've been ignoring are actually a type of fungus.
It's a very common fungus, often overlooked because it simply looks like a crust on a tree.
But the amazing thing about it is that it has the characteristic of bleeding – when you scratch it, it remains red! Fascinating.
Its name, Stereum, means tough, and indeed, it is tough. It's hard to tear, almost like leather.
"Rugosum" comes from the fact that it turns red when scratched.
These fungi are found growing on dead oak tree trunk, you can also find them on harwoods like beech, and chestnut.
It's intriguing how something as seemingly ordinary as a tree crust can hold such secrets.
All in all, it's been short and sweet today. But one thing I'd like to mention: trekking down the muddy slope to reach this mushroom was fun, albeit very slippery. I ended up sliding down! :)
Nevertheless, I'm happy that I've learned about the unique characteristics of this fungus, I will now look at it with a smile and fascination, and won't be ignored or overlooked.
Keep exploring and enjoying the wonders of nature!
Happy learning, everyone!
