A few weekends ago, Sibiu (the city where I'm currently living) set the start of local events that gather many car enthusiasts from all over the country in a single place, where people could attend an exhibition that links people with the same passion all together.
Sadly, I failed to attempt that one for personal reasons, but last weekend there was another car exhibition taking place, which this time was entirely dedicated to the Oltcit brand of cars.
Frankly speaking, I was way too young when these cars were still a 'thing', so I can't remember them other than through pictures, but I still wanted to make my way towards them and admire what is considered a gem these days and not many people managed to take care of them with the passage of time.
Being an exhibition limited to a single brand of cars, there weren't many models displayed, but around 6 or 7. I was happy, though, to see them very well maintained and with no rust, which is the first thing one notices when a car gets into the hands of a person who doesn't really care about it.
More than that, most of the drivers even let the doors and hoods up so people could admire them beyond the aesthetics, and I'm really happy to say that these looked very well maintained too!
The name of "Oltcit" comes from "Olt", which is the county/region where this car was produced (also where I was born) and "Cit", which comes from Citroen.
Being a Romanian brand of cars that is no longer produced, I expect not to be known by a lot of people, but if you have ever heard of Citroen Axel, then keep in mind it's the same car, but this turned out to be a more popular name across Europe instead of "Oltcit" how we all knew it.
The car was designed to be an affordable and compact car that featured modern aspects for its time, with its three-door hatchback shape, flat four engines, and air cooled motors. Sadly, being some sort of an experiment, the car faced quality control issues during its production, making it run for a few years only.
While most of the cars seemed to be brought to this exhibition exclusively, there was one car that had a lot of stickers on one of its windows showing all the car exhibitions and festivals it attended along the way, and there were quite a few!
I was happy, though, to see that there is still empty space left and that the car was in good shape, meaning that most likely I will get to see it in some future car exhibitions/festivals since some of the stickers were part of some other local events.
Have any of you ever heard of this brand of cars? If so, I'd be really curious to find out, as well as hear your overall thoughts on this model! No doubt they are not really interesting for the younger people since a lot of the newer generations are focusing only on the modern and futuristic models, but as a person who was born between generations, I have a guilty pleasure for these and car exhibitions generally. But this exhibition, especially, will always have a special spot in my heart since all these cars were produced just 50 km away from where I was born!
