Since the COVID 19 pandemic hit the world, most employers have been forced to come to accept the whole idea of working from remotely and hybrid and same applies to employees. In the olden days, we hardly had people working from home aside rich people who were their own bosses. They were able to have a much more flexible work schedule as compared to the average employee would always have to show up to work from Monday to Friday and sometimes even stay for some extra hours.
But, things happen and today, almost half of the world works from home. We have had the emergence of online businesses and even content creators who are afforded the luxury of working from home almost all the time. And then, we have some jobs which have been made very flexible to allow employees work hybrid and we mostly see this happening with tech related jobs. With the advancement of technology, there are some jobs where you don’t really need to show up to work everyday but you still get the work done.
With my line of work, I wish to work remotely all the time but then, it can’t be that way. I mostly have to show up to work in order to have one on one sessions with my students. Sometimes, they also come to me at the office when they need help. With this, I wouldn’t say I’m really afforded the luxury of working from home. But, on days when I have to only input data or work on some work related documents, I prefer to work from home since I can get the work than in a few hours and have the rest of the day to myself unlike when I’m at work. I hate to be at work and not have anything to do and so I’d prefer to be at home when I have less things to do so I can catch some sleep.
Personally, I believe that working from home is very flexible and allows the individual to finish up work at their own pace. Sometimes, it might be a bad choice and other times it’s not really a bad choice. I believe that it all depends on the individual. There are some people who are not able to focus and get work done in their comfort zone especially those without an office space. Any little distraction and that’s it. But for others, they are able to work for longer hour’s especially throughout the night and rest during the day.
I always tell people who are going for a job interview that everything is negotiable. Sometimes you need not be rigid at an interview. In as much as you need the job, they also need your services and so if you feel working remotely or hybrid is more productive for you, you can negotiate and get your employees to accept to give you a flexible working schedule. In my point of view, working from home is not really a bad thing at all, at least when most people are working from home there would be less traffic in the mornings.
