Edit: I misunderstood what part of the energy system was disabled for alpha. Hero fatigue is disabled, but energy is capped at 100.
Intro
Hey all! I'm Kstreet, and I've been playing God's Unchained since July/August of 2021. That's how I heard about GoG, and I picked up a founders NFT early enough to get my GoG PFP (https://twitter.com/Kstreet00). I've been eagerly awaiting the release of the demo, and I wanted to share my first experiences with it! I'm probably older than most of you, so I wont be grinding to th e top of the alpha leaderboards, but I'm happy with what I've seen so far!
First Impressions
If you're like me, you've played a ton of dungeon crawlers on mobile. I thought the tutorial for this one was great. It taught you what to do, but didn't drag on forever. I'm extremely impressed with what I'm seeing - especially considering it's pre-alpha.
In the screenshot below, I'm in my Castle - basically the hub where you can select what you want to do next.
Gate of Worlds takes you to the dungeons you can play.
You can see that each level requires 10 energy (the little lightning bolt next to "Requiem 2"). In the alpha, there are no energy limitations, but there will be in the actual game. (This gives old timers like me a fighting chance.)
Next, we pick our squad. I'll get into a little more detail in just a second. In general, I'm impressed with the look of the game, and the screenshot below is a great example of why. The graphics aren't overly cartoonish/childish.
Once you start the dungeon, you see the image below:
You can choose which hero you control by clicking on their icon at the bottom. The other heroes will follow you around and attack/cast automatically. Movement is easy and intuitive. Anyone whose played these types of games on mobile will be comfortable immediately. There is a swipe-to-dodge mechanic that I'm happy to see. A chance for skill to come in to play when dodging big boss shots.
The ultimates are cool. In the image below, Ferulia cast a giant spider web. It seemed to slow enemies down, which makes sense. I'm not sure if it debugs enemies in other ways, too.
I kept control of Zalathar and saved his ultimate for the boss battle. I don't have a screenshot, but it was satisfyingly devastating.
A New Hero
After completing the dungeon, I earned a new hero.
Equipping him on the team was straight forward. You can also see that he is an Earth type "Controller". Can't wait to see what that means.
One thing I noticed that was pretty cool was squad formation bonuses. These give bonuses to hero stats while in effect. This gives us another layer of strategy when forming parties. Very nice!
Summary
Really excited to have a game in my hands. Doubly excited that it already looks and plays so well. I'm sure I'll find bugs/crashes - that's the point of alpha play testing - but so far it looks great! I'll try to keep bringing updates as I play more so anyone who isn't in the demo themselves can get an idea of what it's like.
