So, here’s another fascinating coffee shop from my hometown, Yogyakarta, that I’m excited to share with you. Tucked away near some of the city’s most iconic attractions—Taman Sari Water Castle, Alun-Alun Kidul, and Ngasem Traditional Market—Space Roastery 1890 offers more than just a good cup of coffee; it offers a traditional and cultural experience.
Brief background about the place, Space Roastery 1890 is part of one of the leading coffee shop and roastery brands in Yogyakarta : Space Roastery, which currently operates six branches across the city. As one of its newest outlets, this location stands out with its distinctive character : blending heritage charm with modern coffee culture.
Perhaps one thing that sparks our curiosity is the number “1890” in its name. The number actually represents the historical background of the building, which is a true heritage site. Named "Ndalem Pembanyun", this classic traditional Javanese-style house once belonged to members of the royal family of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII, the ruler of Yogyakarta. Built in 1890, the house has stood for more than a century and is still owned by the Sultan’s family today. The current family member who manages the property collaborated with Space Roastery and eventually transformed it into a coffee shop.
Back to the main topic—let’s talk more about the place itself. As soon as you arrive, you are welcomed by a beautiful blend of traditional and modern design on the front facade. It offers a spacious parking area and a wide terrace with several seating areas, perfect for those who prefer to enjoy their coffee outdoors.
Traditional Javanese ornaments decorate the pillars, ceilings, doors, and mirrors, immediately immersing visitors in a rich cultural atmosphere. A striking sign that reads, “Coffee and a 130-Year-Old Heritage,” further reinforces the building’s historical status. The intricate details and preserved architecture create a strong vintage ambiance, beautifully reflecting its status as a true heritage site.
As you step inside, you are welcomed by the coffee bar, an inviting indoor seating area, and product stall on the side. The indoor space is particularly captivating. Traditional architectural elements blend seamlessly with modern design touches, resulting in a setting that feels both elegant and contemporary without losing its historical soul.
There is something undeniably special about enjoying a cup of coffee here. The atmosphere creates a feeling of sipping coffee in a Sultan’s palace—an impression that feels even more remarkable knowing that the building is, in fact, an authentic royal heritage house.
Talking about the drinks, they offer a wide range of coffee options, from manual brews to iced milk coffee. For those who don’t drink coffee, they also provide a non-coffee menu. As a well-known coffee bean roastery, this place is a perfect spot for coffee enthusiasts like me, as the selection of beans is quite diverse, ranging from local to international varieties.
The menu even includes a guide chart explaining the flavor profiles of each type of bean, which shows how passionate and credible the roastery is. If you still require further guidance, the knowledgeable baristas are more than happy to assist you. The drink prices are quite affordable, ranging from IDR 20,000 to 35,000 (around USD 1–2).
When I visited, I chose a cup of manually brewed Arabica Burundi, drawn to its nutty and bold flavor. It was crafted perfectly and every sip was simply delightful! I can’t wait to come back and explore some of the other beans on their menu—each one promising a new flavor adventure.
Apart from enjoying coffee here, you can also shop for beans, coffee-making equipment, merchandise, and even participate in coffee tasting! The products and merchandise stall is accompanied by detailed descriptions for each type of bean, as well as a flavor chart. So, not only can you shop, but you can also gain knowledge and enjoy a tasting experience !
Overall, it is such a great and unique experience to have coffee in this place. Where else can you chill and enjoy a cup of coffee in a setting that blends vintage charm, historical value, and a modern vibe? For those who love coffee and historical heritage, make sure to visit this spot when you’re in Yogyakarta.
That’s all I have to share for today—hope you enjoyed it, and don’t forget to have your coffee today 😉
