I will never forget them. Three senior citizens who were lifelong friends and very polite respectable men. It was the same every morning, nothing ever changed with their order.
It was my first job working at McDonalds. I got to meet the most interesting and peculiar people during those days. I think it was then I first realized how much I enjoyed meeting new people.
This particular group was one of our favorite visits of the day. Every morning around 6:30 AM, these three friends would come in to order their usual cup of Joe. They’d leave the exact amount of their order total on the counter, turn around and walk away as we prepare their cups of black coffee.
They sat at the exact same table which was right in the middle of the restaurant and began their conversation as usual. As they chatted they would make sure to stop and greet customers with a smile or a “good morning” as they entered the building.
I didn’t understand how just a coffee could suffice. At the young age I was my thinking was on the lines of
Senior citizens need to have a complete breakfast to have the energy they need for the day.
I was always tempted to offer them at least a hash brown or even a biscuit to go with their coffees but I never did. I figured they were grown enough to know what they wanted to eat and could very well ask for food if that’s what was desired.
I didn’t love or appreciate coffee back then. Those were the days I didn’t understand it or why people had to have their morning cup. However, those three men did give me a new perspective on how coffee brings people together.
I was amazed how they would faithfully meet for their cup every morning. I guess for some folks, sharing a coffee with fellowship and conversation is better than having it alone.
When I first started drinking coffee I couldn’t have it on an empty stomach. I had to drink my cup while I was eating my breakfast. By breakfast I mean a decent meal and not just a piece of toast.
I had to have the whole works ie. eggs, bacon, pancakes…something along those lines. My husband on the other hand could drink his cup of coffee without having anything to eat. He even had a cup right after a bowl of cereal.
I figured out that as long as I had foods that were fulfilling, I could handle a cup of coffee. Having a bowl of cereal or oatmeal wasn’t enough. It’s almost like I needed some type of breaded food for me to be able to handle coffee (I’ve always had a weaker stomach and can only handle so much at a time).
Fast forward to my coffee life now…I can drink a cup in the morning by itself and it does suffice. If we’re running late in the mornings for Co-op I just grab me a cup and it gets me by until lunch. This very fact is what made me think about those three friends.
Who would have known I would be okay with having just a cup of coffee in the mornings? It’s amazing how seeing something back then can spring back up causing you to realize how much of an impact it actually had on you.
Now in my adult life I appreciate those working mornings being able to witness such precious moments of lifelong friendship and how much sharing a cup of coffee can bring people together.
Sometimes I imagine myself joining them at the table with my cup of coffee and sharing with them how much their presence and sweet tender hearts impacted me back then. Those tender gatherings are hard to come by nowadays with so much changing in the world. I’ll just hold on to those memories and hope that I too one day will be able to sit and gather with lifelong friends as we share a cup of liquid delight ~
