Can you imagine if your country creates a coffee based on its signature snacks? Maybe savory pie espresso or even potato chips espresso?
In Indonesia, traditional snacks are often mixed into other food or beverages to add extra flavors. Thankfully these traditional snacks are actually good and it makes a perfect combination when mixed into other complex food or beverages. It is just like the coffee that I tried the other day, Java Klepon Espresso. The coffee was a mixture of sweet, savory, and apple sour taste.
But first, what is Klepon itself? klepon is a traditional snack originating from Java. Like many other traditional Indonesian snacks with its most notable feature which combine flour, soybeans, rice, and cassava, klepon is also like that. Klepon is made with a mixture of rice flour filled with palm sugar, and coated with grated coconut.I find that the translation of this snack into beverage is quite fascinating so that's why I am noting it down.
There are recipes out there online that mentioned, coffee will be mixed with coconut milk, palm sugar and green food coloring. The steps are not practical and unfit for a coffee shop, in which it mostly uses instant coffee rather than an espresso. However what I tasted in that cafe was more of an espresso mixed with klepon powder (seemingly extracted from the main ingredients to make klepon)topped with coconut flakes and also palm sugar. When combined together it creates a complexity of tastes that it started off with the dash of espresso taste and aroma followed by layers of sweet and savory.
On a note, the espresso taste will also vary but I reckon the best one for Klepon espresso is something within sour taste (soury & winey) even sweet mellow would be fine too. You can learn to distinguish these in coffee wheel.
The staff didn't give me a spoon to stir it so I had to shake off the cup. It was an interesting cup to say the least and I expect no less from my favorite coffee shop in town.
Would you like to try coffee like that?
