Inherently, running a coffee shop, at least in modern cities of Southeast Asia, isn't easy. I recently talked to a former barista from a well-known coffee shop in town where celebrities frequent. He mentioned that without good marketing, it’s tough surviving the industry. Pricing is another problem which is why from the get-go, a potential coffee shop owner must know their market. “ Who is your target market?”
Coffee is already quite a niche business and even more so, if you only provide a specialty coffee. But coffee shops, especially in a thriving student’s city, offer a lot more than liquid gold. Their interior and exterior design a lot more often has to cater to student’s needs. For example,this Nabe coffee shop that executes it really well.
Nabe coffee is located on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. It is around 3 KM from the city center. Built nearby one of the biggest private universities in the province, it offers a place for students to have discussions or simply work from a cafe.
They have indoor and outdoor options that cater to different needs. For me and my friend, since we both need a place to sit with a socket,the table that they have is already well-equipped with a power socket just built-in to the table. The chair was really convenient to work from and it was quite sturdy. As most coffee shops often don't care about the idea of an ergonomic chair, this coffee shop considers that part.You can sit for hours in this place without getting tired as well as using the wifi. That was quite okay. I normally don’t test the Wifi but at the time, I sort of wanted to know the speed of it and it was quite decent. Apparently, I found a thesis that was also talking about an ergonomic chair and one that focuses on a cafe’s chair here It’s quite an interesting read and I think that more coffee shops should learn from it because it would enhance the patron's experience.
The coffee itself was surprisingly good. After having an awful experience in another place with their overpriced latte that makes me sick. So, coming to that place, the coffee was a great experience. I ordered one of their signature bubbles of jelly that was so fun to eat. I ended up drinking 2 coffee from the place and I even craved more. It really was that good and definitely Mac’s approved. For a coffee shop that’s not offering a specialty coffee, their milk and coffee composition was quite balanced.
Although the only problem that this place has is just that it’s really far away from mine. If it were nearby, I would have gone to this place everyday just because the place is quite ergonomic and has the right lighting for a coworking coffee shop space.
