Have you ever heated about Geisha? Well, not about the Japanese one. I mean the geisha in coffee meaning. It’s believed to be the most aromatic coffee variety and it has nothing to do with Japan at all. Rather than, “Geisha” or “Gesha” how it’s pronounced sometimes, is a coffee originating from Ethiopia.
After its discovery it was sent to a Coffee Research Station in Tanzania to be cultivated and researched. This was back in the 1950s. In more recent years Geisha coffee started to be main part of the Cup of Excellence competition. In 2005 the winner of the Panama COE was exactly a Geisha coffee and it was sold for about 770 USD per kilogram. 12 years later, the record was beaten and a Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda was sold for the mind-blowing 1320 USD per kilogram of raw coffee.
The Geisha that Dabov Specialty Coffee offers had won the 5th place in Cup of Excellence competition held in Peru, 2021. This places this exact coffee among the best available coffees in the world. And it comes at a very reasonable price. I paid for this one about 25$ for 200g of coffee, which is far from the 1320$/kg price, right? 😁
Now let’s really see why this coffee is called Geisha.
The coffee is named after Gori Gesha forest - the place where this coffee really originates from. And thus it’s named after its area of origin. The Geisha coffee is known usually for its sweet flavor and diversified aroma that includes jasmine and floral notes generally and some fruits or chocolate, depending on the processing technique of the coffee cherries. Do you know what’s the difference in processing the coffee fruits? I think it’s a long topic and I should leave it for future posts of me.
This exact coffee is Light roastedand comes from Santa Teresa farm in Peru. The altitude of the farm is 1688m and the process is natural. It promises to give flavors similar to Jasmine, Flowers, Liquor Chocolate and Raspberry. Wow, sounds fancy, right?
My brewing method is my beloved V60 and I think this coffee can be best enjoyed brewed by filter. It’s a bit sad, that ground coffee degrades in its flavor qualities pretty quickly, so I’d better enjoy it these days, before the beautiful aroma dissolves and leaves me with a coffee that’s not worth 25$ per package of 200g. Actually, I can think that it costs less, because I got a bag of Brazilian coffee as a Gift of the Month. This means that I pair the same amount of money for the same overall amount of coffee. That’s perfect!
I cannot really explain what’s the exact aroma of the coffee, but when brewing I can definitely catch the premium bite of it. The light roast level really contributes for the full pleasure.
I can say that I’m really happy for ordering this coffee. When I took my first sip, it really made me get some goosebumps! I cannot remember having this feeling any other time when tasting coffee. This can be due to excitement l, but of course it has a lot to do with the actual taste of the coffee. Now I understood why Geisha is one of the best coffees in existence and I’m happy that I chose this one.
I’m somehow sorry that I didn’t order it full bean, but I really didn’t want to experiment with grinding this coffee on my new grinder. Yep( you read it correctly! I ordered an electric grinder for my birthday, and of course I also ordered 200 grams of coffee, unground, for some testing. Well, the grinder is with expected delivery from 13th to 14th July, so I cannot be more excited.
I sincerely hope that the Geisha coffee will not degrade at all, until I will finish it all. It would really be a pity if you throw this aroma away. So if you ever have a chance to try a Geisha coffee, please go for it! You won’t be sorry. 😉
Now I’ll wish you to have a really nice and aromatic weekend with your beloved ones and some delicious coffee. Bye and see you soon!
