Hello Hive!
Welcome to "Conversations Over Coffee" at Cinnamon Cup Coffee , your Virtual Coffee Shop!
All meetings and conversations start with a cup of coffee ☕️ and a sprinkling of cinnamon 😋 if you'd like!
Before we begin, why don't you pour yourself a cup, to boosts your energy and concentration, and let's discuss how we could invest our resources (time and skills), by starting a small business.
How to invest your resources by starting a business
Most of us are in 9 to 5 jobs, or odd shift jobs, for a company, merely making ends meet. We spend most of our time doing jobs and collecting wages yet feeling no sense of satisfaction, still we turn up day after day and find ourselves just going through the motions. Not surprising, because we are creatures of habit, and a basic human need is for us to feel a sense of security and safety hence, we may avoid taking risks.
Nonetheless, money is one of the leading causes of stress. Everyone worries about money or lack of it. We stress over whether we'll be able to cover the bills, if we will be able to go on a holiday, if we will be able to send our kids to school/college, and even if we would be able to cover that medical bill in case of emergency or ill health.
Ideas
In this crazy world which seems incomprehensible at times, there are few essential evaluations needed for us to actualise our potentials.
See, there’s a potential market out there for every skill.
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly what is essential is invisible to the eye. - The Little Prince.
We've got these ideas in mind, so let's discuss them while we’re here:
- Our Acquired Skill(s)
- Our Hobbies/Enjoyment/Time
- Our Specialised Experience(s)
Acquired Skill(s)
You may have been doing your current job, or even a variation of it at another company, so I’d like to think that you’ve acquired a fair amount of skills which you can perform at a high level, correct? You’re probably bored with your job and thinking of ditching it for something completely new that you’ve dreamed about, correct?
Have you ever thought that it might be a better idea to narrow your focus on a specific area that you already have skills or consider your “expertise” and probably offer a service in a specialised field?
Let’s say you're working as a Concierge for a company, and you send parcels and arrange to collect parcels for clients everyday and you have good contacts and a great network of people in the line of getting the job done. You know all the ins and outs and what exactly is needed to get that job done, and all the challenges customers would encounter if they were to accomplish these tasks personally.
How about you setting up your own company to start providing this service for a fee?
Or one of your roles might be to look after kids in your current job, which means that the company would have done the necessary ground work in terms of background checks to ensure that you are legible and suitable for that role. How about you venturing off to provide that service privately for yourself?
The aim is to take away a skill and specialise in it. Practice makes perfect. You don’t have to be an "expert" at the start, overtime you’ll find your way and improve. You just have to learn to be flexible and adaptable for personal growth, and actively participate in whatever venture you might take on.
Summary: Identify and know your best skills, paying close attention to your strengths and weaknesses and take necessary steps to improve and be confident in your abilities.
'Which ladder are you going to climb?'
Our Hobbies/Enjoyment/Time
What are you most interested in and what do you do most in your spare time?
As they say, do something that you love so it doesn’t feel like you’re actually working. With this belief, some of our favourite hobbies could turn into money.
Whatever it is that sparks your interest the most, take some time out and write down them down, and see which one you would like to be your main focus.
Summary: We should set our goals as a personal ladder for us to apply monetary values to our hobbies and interest. We should think of climbing the ladder in terms of taking the plunge and starting our own businesses with our current skills, and improving our skills, customer base, and reputation. All these things will improve over time.
Specialised Experience(s)
Coinciding with Acquired Skills, we all have special experience that is unique to many others. Take the time to identify and analyse your experiences. For example: which jobs do you do for a company of even for yourself everyday, where you had to figure it out from start to finish, because there was no information or know-how about a job you needed to do. You could turn that into a money making by documenting the steps, contacts and all the networking you had to do to achieve that job, and in turn offer that service to someone.
Summary: if you have a skill or knowledge to a high degree of something, such as project planning, languages, plumbing, craft, you should consider offering your service as a private teacher or offering classes to make money doing something that you enjoy doing.
Yum, yum, yum!

Would you like to come in for a cup of coffee?
What are some of your ideas on investing your resources by starting a business?
In most cases, we already possess items which could be used to perform many jobs and services. Do a stocktaking of all your possessions and see how you could utilise them on a money making venture. Go through attics and storage of yourself or even other family members, look around you, to see what you can either sell, or use as capital for business undertakings.
