We are in a not too distant future, AIs have replaced humans in different types of jobs, which should not surprise us because, of course, many employers find it easier to keep an AI, since it is a robot without human needs, than to pay a salary to a real person. There are very few jobs left where we are valued as humans and those who did not update themselves by learning how to coexist with AIs and how to take advantage of them, were almost renegades from society. I, Alexander, trained and prepared myself so that an AI would not be an impediment to my work, but a support tool, and I was also lucky enough to enter in time in a company where people did not turn their backs on their own species.
Today, as every day, while I was on my way to work, I approached the small kiosk where an AI is the one who attends to take my respective morning coffee. The kiosk has a rather cold appearance, nothing like the old kiosks that emanated a cozy feeling, but hey, at least they sold coffee, breakfast and one or another dessert. As I asked the AI for coffee, I got a response I wasn't expecting. The machine with its robotic voice told me that they no longer sold coffee because it was considered unhealthy and offered me a tea, my eyes opened like saucers and my right eyebrow arched in inevitable questioning and indignation. Don't get me wrong, I like tea, but how can they stop selling coffee?, what's the reason?, many people start their day with a cup of coffee to fill up with energy, it's like a sacred ritual.
After such a comment by the AI, I remained thoughtful and then looked around me, something was not right. The people walking through the streets and even the ones I could see in their cars looked like zombies, as if they had no soul, they looked tired and miserable. Quickly, I thought, could this be due to the lack of coffee?, is it something general?, if it was, I could not stay like that, something had to be done, but I could not dedicate myself to think about it now, because I had to get to work early.
Once at work, I saw how several of my colleagues were discouraged, commenting that it was due to the lack of coffee. It is important to clarify that coffee was still available in other places, but having installed AI in several establishments, there were not many options and the ones that were available were overcrowded, everything was out of control. Talking with my co-worker Renato, we came to the conclusion that what was happening made no sense, an Artificial Intelligence could not tell us what drink to consume or not, they could not force us, we created them as support, they cannot rule over us, besides, where did this idea come from?, could it be a company that is behind all this?, could it all be some kind of commercial strategy?, I really cannot know for sure, but if we raise our voices, this may end.
My co-workers and I began to come up with a plan to unite people, seeking to get us all to raise our voices against the incoherent decision that the AIs should not sell coffee. If they don't sell coffee, then we would deactivate them, simple as that. We decided to call our plan "NO COFFE, NO AI" and we started to execute it by creating a thread on Twitter explaining the whole movement and the reasons for it, quickly several coffee lovers joined the cause, they wouldn't be able to beat us, nobody can tell us what to drink or not, especially when it comes to a millenary and useful beverage like coffee.
The next day, lots of people with signs were in the streets located in the areas where the AIs should sell products, including coffee, determined to strike, the word had spread successfully. Where complaints were ignored, people took justice into their own hands and began disconnecting AIs as best they could. Seeing so much commotion, security agents began to appear, but they could not take us all to jail, especially because no violence was ever exercised, if anything they could accuse us of damaging private property, but we did not really damage anything, so they could not do much, today humanity was united for a cause and that cause was coffee.
As I mentioned, it was to be expected that the security agents would not be successful and the private companies that owned the AIs when they saw what happened, had no choice but to give in and reconfigure them to sell coffee. Now, you may wonder what really happened, well, a company managed by a man who does not enjoy coffee, configured several of his AIs so that they would not sell coffee and somehow this spread to the AIs of other companies, creating complete chaos. Currently, that unmentionable man is being investigated and the AIs are being analyzed, their use is being considered, because humanity was alarmed by seeing how a configuration of some of them got out of control many of them, creating in some way their own autonomy. Now, I believe Humanity has hope of regaining protagonism in the labor field again.
This event was a bit unfortunate, but it brought positive results. Nobody messes with coffee.
