I woke up still gripping tight to the wooden spatula in my hand. I couldn't afford to make the same mistake I made last year–let my guard down.
April fool's day during my childhood was fun. My siblings would just tell a big lie that would either make me so sad or very happy. After wallowing in my emotions, they would yell "April fool!" However, since Marcus came into my life, April fool's days haven't been the same. He always comes up with one very nasty plan; which I always fall bait to.
Last year, he laced the house with invisible trigger wires. Being my carefree self, I walked right into the trap and I was instantly bathed with white paint. The year before, he did something equally outrageous.
I don't know what it is with this day. I still wonder who was the mastermind behind it all. Angela thought as she got up from bed.
"Marcus?!" She called out
"Hmm, babe" he responded from the bathroom "I'm brushing my teeth".
"Okay. " She said. Still wondering what Marcus was up to this time. She scanned the room for any clue. Nothing. This was too good to be true.
"Babe. Our cups of morning delight are on the kitchen cabinet. Could you grab them for us" Marcus yelled from the bathroom.
Such a gentleman. I have never missed a cup of morning coffee since I moved in with Marcus. He knows that coffee makes me happy and so he consciously gives me a cup of happiness each morning.
"Alright. I will do just that". I responded, as I headed towards the kitchen. I was careful with every step I took. Could he have placed a trap somewhere close to the cups of coffee? Angela thought out loud. She stopped abruptly by the kitchen door, scanning all the nooks and crannies for anything that looked unusual. Nothing.
She sighed "Maybe he has changed or maYbe, he hasn't. Either way, my cup of coffee would prepare me for whatever my prank king had cooked up". She walked briskly towards the cabinet, grabbed both cups and went back to the room.
Marcus was out of the bathroom. He looked as handsome as ever.
"Good morning babe" he said, placing a kiss on my cheeks.
"Good morning" I responded, throwing him a sceptical look.
"What? Why are you looking at me that way" he said, smiling.
"So what's your plan? What do you plan on pranking me with time around?"
"My darling, you need to calm your nerves. I barely even remembered what day it was today" he said, with his signature sly smile. Those sly smiles were never good. "Can you hand me my cup of coffee?" He asked
"Nope. I want to drink from your cup. Take mine instead."
"I knew you would say this. It's fine, you can have mine". He said, collecting the cup I pointed in his direction.
Was he planning to prank me with kindness? I took a sip from his cup and immediately knew why Marcus let me drink from his cup with no arguments.
"Oh my goodness Marcus!" I shrilled. "Why would you do this to me?" I said, almost in tears.
Marcus stood by the corner of our bedroom laughing his lungs out.
"You need to see your face babe," he said, still laughing wholeheartedly.
"You brewed my coffee with hotdog water?!"
"Well if that is how you want to put it. You do know that it is technically my cup of coffee right" Marcus said amidst giggles. His laughter wasn't helping matters. He had taken away my morning delight and now my day was about to get ruined.
"So what is in the other cup? The same thing? I asked.
"Yes. I wouldn't let you drink it alone" he said with puppy eyes.
"Yeah. How very kind of you my love". I walked out of the room and headed straight to the kitchen to fix myself a cup of coffee. I wouldn't let my day get ruined. Not this way.
As I took a sip of my coffee, a realisation hit me. "Every year, Marcus pranks me and goes scot free. How about a revenge prank". I was now the one grinning like a villain. I came up with a plan that was going to work and I immediately set it in motion.
As Marcus was getting ready to leave for work, I took my phone to him
"Babe, your boss is on the phone. He wants to talk to you"
"My boss? Why didn't he just call me instead?"
"He tried, but he couldn't reach you"

Marcus grabbed the phone from my hands and just like I said, his boss was at the other end. I took a sip of my coffee, fully aware of the conversation the two of them were having. A few minutes later, Marcus stood there, dumbfounded.
"Babe. What happened? Why do you look so pale?" I inquired, looking as innocent as ever.
"I just got fired." Marcus managed to say. He looked really devastated but I couldn't disclose the prank just yet. That would take away the fun from it
"Oh darling. I'm so sorry about this." I said, leading him to the closest chair. "We're going to get through this together". I concluded, handing him a cup of coffee.
I watched as he kicked off his shoes, loosened his tie and took a sip of his coffee. I won!
Marcus' boss happened to be a good friend of mine from way back who owed me a favour. I called him earlier and asked him to be a part of my game. He willfully agreed to give Marcus a day off and also play a part in my game.
Now, all I had to do was play the role of an understanding partner till I was satisfied. I looked at my wrist watch.
"8:45 am" I could do this all day.
