Here is something very different, over the last week The Piece Hall in Halifax has been slowly transformed with new structures fitted into the centre and long flags bearing Russian wordings all around the edge.
The popular old cloth market will be closed all next week as will the many stores inside it, this is rumoured to be so filming can take place for a new Marvel series on Disney + Secret Invasion - reference from Yorkshire Live and also Yorkshire Evening Post
It's been interesting to see the transformation unfold while dodging the massive production crew working on it to do my weekly deliveries of coffee to shops for
I'm also excited to see the series when it is done and the role the Piece Hall plays - although I have this feeling that the weeks worth of filming will turn into a few minutes in one of the episodes - a blink and you will miss it sort of thing.
Back to coffee roasting and the Y piece I added to the outside ducting for the 30kg roaster is working well - it's pointing down to keep the rain out. During normal roasting very little happens, the smoke leaves out of the top hat with grill like normal - this addition helps when I drop the coffee out when it is roasted and the cooling fan is turned on increase the volume of air pushed through the pipe - ideally the cooling would have it's own pipe work but running two sets of 300mm through the warehouse to the outside was not really practical - merging them on the inside made for a far tidier option. To explain the issue best - imagine a water hose pipe you put some tiny holes in along it's length - when you run water through the hose with end fully open there are no leaks - because there is no pressure. But when you put your thumb over the end and restrict the flow - suddenly those tiny holes leak water out because the pressure builds up and it finds any opportunity it can to leak. The same sort of thing happens with the roasted coffee smoke - when the cooling fan goes on it increases pressure in the pipe, the increased air flow is held back by the rain cover outside and so it finds every possible join in the ducting it can to escape - giving little smoke emissions from joints inside when the cooling is on. Adding the Y piece gives the back pressure somewhere to go outside which helps keep the inside smoke free. Once I finally refurb the intermediate fan that used to sit where the Y piece now is and helped suck everything out - until it clogged up with coffee oils and chaff - I'm going to try attaching that to the Y piece so it can help suck the pressure out while not being in the main smoke flow to get clogged up so easily.
New green coffee is landing every week at the moment, this batch has something difference coffee from Ecuador - it's quite expensive but very full bodied. Also on the left a new Brazilian coffee - which on the whole has been very scarce for the past month pending the latest season crop landing in February.
