It's been a while, but life as always is just a bit crazy. Well to be fair 2022 is just turning into the hellish year, a white knuckle ride of pure snowballing misery so it's with some relief this post has something quite good....
After work on the 1st July I headed North to Newcastle Upon Tyne - way back in March an old friend from University had said there was a party planned there for one of our other close friends to celebrate his Birthday - given some of have not seen each other for 27 years it could be a bit awkward.....but we shared good times back then so I agreed to show up.
Thankfully the mighty Rav 4 returned in time, and while the trip up was longer then expected at 2 hours it was at least fuss free enjoying the radar cruise control and lane assist that makes driving on a motorway such a breeze.
The Birthday boy himself is currently doing work studying endangered species on the estuary islands so this was his view heading in on the friday night.
I made it for 7.30pm on the Friday and was fortunate enough after checking into my accommodation to get a lift in to the city by another Uni friend who had booked somewhere nearby. When you haven't seen people for 27 years you kind of expect it to be a bit awkward to catch up, but really off the bat we were all chatting away as if we were back at Keele University Students Union in 1997.
The Saturday however was the big day, as I got the lift Friday night Saturday it was my turn to drive people in and parked in the city centre multistory - paid for until the Sunday afternoon because it would be taxis back on the evening. The Rav 4 looks none the worse for it's accident damage after 8 weeks of repairs - although the number plate is a bit bright now lol!
For reference that is how it looked after the accident on the 26th April, where someone pulling out of a side road without checking properly damaged every panel on the left side, front alloy, front suspension, new doors and door hinges, new headlight, an ECU specialist had to replace an entire ECU harness because lane assist, parking sensors and auto high beam all had errors - and the front bumper of course is the main reason it took 8 weeks to fix - because they had to order it twice!
Anyway back to Newcastle Upon Tyne, beautiful city full of historic architecture a single day of walking around does not do it justice.
Despite the clouds the weather stayed quite fair for the day which was fortunate.
We managed to get a table outside the slug and lettuce right on the river Tyne and next to the tyne bridge.
So the Super Shiny building is Sage Gateshead a concert and music education centre - confusingly across the Tyne from Newcastle is actually Gateshead which is a different area so while we could see it quite close the river is the border line to the next county. I was amazed how shiny it is still - as it has been in place for well over 10 years - and was desperate to see someone crawling over it with a cloth to polish it clean!
Later in the evening I had to head back to the car to retrieve a box of coffee, I did some custom coffee bags for everyone as a keepsake and a Aeropress Go for the birthday boy. When I got there I found two pigeons that seemed to like Toyota's Urban Khaki very much - most of Sunday afternoon when I got back was spent washing pigeon poo off the Rav 4.
I wish I had taken more photos on the day, but no doubt Newcastle Upon Tyne is a great place to visit - and even better with old friends and many new ones too.
