What a week, this isn't the UK although it could be next week as we have a "mini ice age" forecast - this is from one of my snowboarding trips to the French Alps - I could do with a break in the mountains again because work is getting killer hard..
Hard to believe this was taken at the end of January this year - good old reasonably priced French SUV battling through the snow. Fortunately we rarely get snow like this - because the Renault was useless on snow - you could not turn the traction control off and as soon as you got on a slippy bit of road it just spent all it's time breaking automatically to control an non existent skid. I have more confidence in the Rav 4 Hybrid, it's been lugging 500kg of coffee and chocolate sauce bottles around the past few weeks without even breaking a sweat - in fact the mpg increases with a full boot load because the extra weight increases the hybrid battery charging on the downhill sections - and then the electric motor works with the engine on the uphill.
It doesn't look much like a van the Rav 4, but it certainly carries a good van load. And it's the first Toyota I have had, following a range of Ford, Fiat, Vauxhall, and Renaults before it I'm totally impressed. It's the first Automatic I have driven as well - and I'm really sold on the simplicity - while a manual stick shift can be exciting all that changing gear - finding the right rev's to shift up - it's fun for a track day but god it's tedious when you are stuck in traffic every day trying to drive a few miles to work. And the Hybrid system is incredible - seamless you set off slow on electric battery and motor - with good charge that will get you from standing to 25mph with no petrol engine use - unless of course you want to set off quick - then it just kicks in the 2.5litre petrol engine and uses that along with the battery to blow you from 0 to 60 in under 8 seconds - that's quick for a big old van type thing. What's really clever is how the car just works out what it is doing on the fly as you drive - rolling on flat the engine is off and the electric motor uses battery power to keep you rolling. Head downhill - you don't need to touch the brake, if you are not using the accelerator pedal at any time the battery regen kicks in using the motion of the car to recharge the internal battery while slowing it down - when I'm going downhill or approaching traffic lights I'm touching no pedals just recharging the battery with a light touch of the brake to stop if needed.
The colour might be....different but it was also free - why pay £500 for a white, red or blue one when you can have what they claim is "urban Khaki" for free. An it's front wheel drive, not 4 wheel drive because again that bumped up the price, and I'm not going to go green lane trekking, driving up Ben Nevis or any off road nonsence so paying more for 4 wheel drive is just silly - and when the snow comes hopefully the traction control off button will help make facing snow covered hills far better then the Renault - and it has a trick with the automatic gearbox - I can put it into manual gear selection and manually blip it up and down the gears as I choose so when the going get's slippy I can keep it in low gear instead of it going nuts and spinning the wheels like super crazy fast.
