The mountain you see on the photo is located in the south-western corner of Mauritius. This mountain called Le Morne, is of historical significanse and one of two places that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can hike to the top to get a panoramic view. On the way to the top you will be walking in the footsteps of slaves who ran away. The history of the mountains is a rather sad story. The mountain became a refuge for slaves who escaped / ran away during the 18th century. Slavery on the island was abolished in 1835, but the runaways didn't know that. So when they saw soldiers on their way toward the mountain, they thought they were going to be arrested. They all jumbed from the top into their death. Today Le Morne has become a symbol of sacrifice and freedom. This photo is my entry to contest @photofeed/photofeed-contest-landscape-photography-round-164
