Driving along the Quebrada de las Conchas will make you want to stop at each turn of the road. This stretch of spectacular landscape starts aprox. 50 kilometers north of Cafayate. This drive must be one of the most scenic drives in Argentina. It will definitly make you wonder if you are still on this planet. This photo is my entry to contest @photofeed/photofeed-contest-landscape-photography-round-45
We startet in Salta and drove aprox. 190 kilometers along route 68 to Cafayate. The landscape was green at the beginning, but when we were aprox. 50 kilometers north of Cafayate the landscape changes. From now on we drove through a valley of incredible landscape. The green landscape became red / orange and instead of trees we entered a landscape of rock formations. We did stop many places, but since we were staying in Cafayate for three nights we had the oportunity to go back.
This unique geological formations have been formed by water, wind and also tectonic activity. I haven’t studiet information about the geology when it comes to when the landscape was formed etc. But I quess it must have been long time ago. We includet Cafayate into our travel itinerary because it’s the second most important wine district in Argentina (next to Mendoza). We ended up driving back to the same stretch of road every day, to explore the area on foot.
Along the Quebrada there are many landmarks, signposted and with parking possibilites. They were easy to find. Many of the formations resembles something that has then given name to it. Like the Devil’s Throat and the Amphitheater, which also has a very special acustic. Each of the days we went back we parked the car and went hiking into the landscape.
