The photo "Innsbrucks Double Spiral Staircase" is my entry for Travel Contest No. 170 with the topic "Architecture".
The 51 meter high Gothic City Tower, in which this spiral staircase construction winds, was first mentioned in documents in 1450 and is located in the old town of Innsbruck.
It is a landmark of Innsbruck and allows, if you climb it via the 133-step double spiral staircase, beautiful views over the city and the surrounding mountains. It also goes down over 133 steps, but on a separate path of the same staircase construction.
The old iron staircase from the 19th century was replaced in the course of the renovation of the City Tower with a new construction by Hanno Vogl-Fernheim, which is reminiscent of a double helix due to its special construction in the form of two free-hanging spiral staircases running in opposite directions.
According to the definition, architecture in the broadest sense describes the manual occupation and aesthetic engagement of people with the built space. Vitruv's "De Architectura" already describes that architecture is based on the three principles of stability (Firmitas), usefulness (Utilitas) and grace/beauty (Venustas). In my opinion, this spiral staircase is a successful re-adaptation that lives up to these classic principles of architecture.

das Foto "Innsbrucks doppelte Wendeltreppe" ist mein Beitrag für den Travel Contest Nr. 170 mit dem Thema "Achitektur".
Der 51 Meter hohe gotische Stadtturm, in dem sich diese Wendeltreppenkonstruktion befindet, wurde 1450 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt und befindet sich in der Altstadt von Innsbruck. Es ist ein Wahrzeichen von Innsbruck und erlaubt, so man ihn über die 133 Stufen hohe Doppel-Wendeltreppe erklimmt, schöne Ausblicke über die Stadt und die umliegenden Berge. Hinunter geht es ebenfalls über 133 Stufen, allerdings auf einem separaten Weg der selben Treppenkonstruktion. Die alte Eisentreppe aus dem 19. Jahrhundert wurde im Zuge der Sanierung des Stadtturms durch eine Neukonstruktion von Hanno Vogl-Fernheim ersetzt, die durch ihre spezielle Konstruktion in Form zweier freihängenden gegenläufigen Wendeltreppen an eine Doppelhelix erinnert.
Laut Definition bezeichnet Architektur im weitesten Sinne die handwerkliche Beschäftigung und ästhetische Auseinandersetzung des Menschen mit dem gebauten Raum. Schon Vitruvs "De Architectura" beschreibt, dass Architektur auf den drei Prinzipien Stabilität (Firmitas), Nützlichkeit (Utilitas) und Anmut/Schönheit (Venustas) beruht. Meiner Ansicht nach ist diese Wendeltreppe eine gelungene Neuadaption, die diesen klassischen Prinzipien der Architektur gerecht wird.
