The Soča - it's my all time favourite river, I love it in every season, but most in Spring.
Soča
The Emerald Beauty in Slovenia
Before 2020 I have been in the Soča valley in Slovenia almost every week and you might remembe my many posts and photos from this river. Well, because of the restrictions and closed borders I haven't been there as often in the past two years, so I enjoy it even more now since traveling is not restricted anymore.

This valley and the green river is beautiful at any time of year, but I think it looks best in Springtime when everything gets green again. The more or less brown and dull mosses and grasses on the rocks give everything a fresh look and the melting snow in the mountains turns the river into a raging river at places.

The Soča valley, as beautiful as it is, has seen a lot of violence in World War I when the twelve battles of the Isonzo on the Italian front happened in this area. It's called "Isonzo" battles because on the Italian side the Soča is called Isonzo. Over half a million Austro-Hungarian and Italian Soldiers have lost their lives between May 1915 and November 1917.

In Summertime the valley is a popular place for people and families who enjoy the nature and the crystal clear water of the river. Usually the parking spots along the narrow road through the valley are full of cars as soon as the morning sun is high and warm enough. I'm there in the early mornings and leave before most arrive and so it doesn't bother me a lot.

You know I love the more intimate photos of waterfalls and often the smaller a waterfall is, the better 😊 So, this waterfall below is "Tiny", a tiny little waterfall that I have photographed quite a few times in the past years. When there's not much water in the river you can't see it, but after a rain it's always there just like in these photos. And I know that because of its height it can't be called a waterfall, but to me it is one 😁

Spring
A bursting into greenness;
A waking as from sleep;
A twitter and a warble
That make the pulses leap:
A watching, as in childhood,
For the flowers that, one by one,
Open their golden petals
To woo the fitful sun.
A gust, a flash, a gurgle,
A wish to shout and sing,
As, filled with hope and gladness,
We hail the vernal Spring.

The Soča is 138 kilometres (86 miles) long and flows from its source in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in Slovenia to the Adriatic Sea which the river enters near the town of Monfalcone in Italy.

Another week has gone by and this weekend I'm completely free. We are visiting our daughter and a niece with her family in Lower Austria, but I hope to find some time to take photos while the others still sleep in the morning 😉
