It is always nice to have a chance visiting the area that we had experienced a lot of unforgettable memories in life. The place that store various wonderful moments of certain period. Some time ago, more and less about one and half month ago, I spend a day short visit to the campus Jabal Ghafur University. The place that very special in my heart. I used to registered as one of the occupant of this campus. I studied here, although not until finished, then I worked here as the employee at UPT Lab Bahasa or Language Laboratory.
Joined as a student in 2005, at that time campus activities were still at the shophouse on Jalan Pasi Rawa, Sigli, I had many sad moments on campus. After Aceh was peaceful, the pulse of the campus, which had fluctuated as a result of the 1999-2005 RI-GAM conflict, students enrolled in Jabal Ghafur experienced a rapid increase. We were forced to attend middle and high school in the afternoon. The campus rented space for us to study at various schools in the city of Sigli, prior to the 2009 student demonstration that succeeded in bringing Jabal Ghafur back to Gle Gapui, Indrajaya where the site was originally established.
There are many stories that started the story of returning the campus to Gle Gapui (Bukit of Forgiveness). The 2009 student demonstration was the beginning of a series of events that drained a lot of our energy involved in it. What drains our energy is a very strong political nuance. Student's demonstration with the issues of the professional management and existence of the campus is in disarray, twisted by interested people with access to the largest local media that contains news, UNIGHA STUDENTS DEMAND TO PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. That is the source of disaster that makes campus internal conflicts often ride on this issue.
It would be a very long story if I wrote it in this post, especially regarding why the issue of the Jabal Ghafur Campus Foundation, people asked to be taken over by the government and turned into a public campus. In short, it all started with the breakthrough of the founder of the late Pidie Regent, Nurdin Abdurrahman. In the process of establishing the campus, he had mobilized state attributes for the smooth development process. People in Pidie were asked to work voluntarily, working together to clear the Gle Gapui forest. The local people who are gardening on the Gle Gapui hill are asked to hand over the land with compensation for the payment of the plants in it. To the people, the issue that was developed was the construction of an integrated pesantren which later turned into a campus. In short, the Jabal Ghafur Campus Development Foundation (YPKJG) was born which turned out to be controlled by a group of friends or family and remains a big question to this day.
In the past, I always said that it was not a matter of changing campuses from private to public. Good management is the key. Honestly, I was pessimistic about the government at that time. It is proven in its journey, the issue of campus change is only selling the elite campus officials who have successfully ridden student demonstrations. The local government is confused about finding loopholes when administratively YPKJG is protected by laws and regulations. It's even ridiculous, when the RI-GAM conflict that caused the YPKJG to almost collapse in the 2000s, the government was once asked to take over, but the regent at that time refused on the grounds that he did not have the funds. Conditions that had reversed after peace in 2005 when students were bustling again, peaked when the 2009 student action took place, the government was rumored to be ready to take over the Jabal Ghafur campus for nationalization. But the issue is like an old mirage.
The issue of state campuses which has been raised by various parties and has become the main issue in various student demonstrations after 2009 has resulted in a negative campaign for campuses. In recent years the number of students is very small. UNIGHA is still the campus of last choice for the graduating generation in Pidie. This condition should of course be a special concern for the Pidie community. Especially community leaders, big young leaders with a campus activist background to stop politics on campus. Education must be in harmony with the source of the light for the darkness of the nation. Currently, I see that there is new hope from a campus that is increasingly conducive. Hopefully in the future, all stakeholders in Pidie can unite their thoughts for a more appropriate education for the future of the young generation now and in the future.
