In recent days we keep ranting and complaining about the present economic situation in the country. It's so sad that we have to be a witness to this kind of era. An era where there is inflation in the price of goods and services and this has affected the value of our money.
The rate of importation increases daily, thereby we get drastic reductions in the rate of exportation. One thing I knew that happened in the past is the fact that Nigeria was known to be one of the best exporters since we are blessed with a lot of natural resources, and also blessed with fertile lands.
We were fully into Agriculture, and then we could provide for the nation and feed other nations with our agricultural products. I know Nigeria was once one of the best producers of oil palm, kola nuts, cocoa, and many other products. But where is Nigeria today?
How I wish we could all go back to the past and then get back to our standards. This is more of a reason why on the national flag agriculture was tagged with the green colour. We forgot our ways.
Nowadays you even see a lot of youths growing up in villages and rural settlements but they never wanted such a life, maybe because of the level of civilization in these rural settlements, they would find their way into the city to seek a better living. One thing they forgot is that the good living they are trying to settle for, who is going to bring that to them? The old men and women they left in the village?
No one is fully interested in agriculture anymore, our governments discovered oil and gas, and then that became a major focus and target of the country, yet the oil and gas we have still serve as a punishment for us.
Gone are the days when agriculture was so tedious and stressful. Nowadays technology has come into place and I even think we should find it easier to embrace and even perform better than in the old times.
The only effort needed by a farmer is just human labor to control all of these tools. They can perform multiple times the effort of a hundred human labour, they save time, costs, and stress, and make products faster and easier.
The likeness of a tractor could be coupled with a ridge or ploughing tools and then hectares of land could be ploughed in no time. Compared to the old time when hoes were used to plough and make ridges, or the use of beasts of burdens.
There are planters, these planters will plant the seeds for you, with a perfect row lining and also accuracy at its peak. There are irrigation techniques if there are times when there wouldn’t be any rain to water the crops naturally. When the plants are fully grown, there are harvesters to harvest the produce, and then for processing, there are a lot of processing machines.
If we are to dive into livestock production, we have good lands for rearing and breeding. All we need is to focus more on what we produce. This way we won't need imported products that much, it is said that when food Or feeding is out of one’s problem then the rest are easily solved.
