Hi good people, I hope you're all having a good time. In this world of AI, we have all sorts of new worries now. Some of us are fearing of losing our jobs, some of us are thinking about people simply becoming more dumb because AI can do a lot of things for which people don't have to use their brains anymore and what not. While one such task where people are not using as much as their brains anymore or so is what people are claiming is coding. Yes I'm talking about computer code. It is widely believed that people are simply more dumb in terms of coding skills because they now just ask the AI to do the code for them. And they call it vibe coding. I don't entirely agree with this, which might sound defensive and obvious because it's my reputation on the line but maybe hear me out.
Let's go back. I'd say 10 years. Because AI has been around us for at least 5 years if I'm not wrong. So before AI, how did people code? The office answer is people simply googled it. They googled for documentation, they googled for how to solve X problem, they scrolled through forums in stackoverflow and Reddit. And somehow they would find something in those comments and replies and documentations and simply try them out until something works. Now what does modern AI do? It eliminates the search part and it also eliminates a large portion of the testing. Because half the time or by current standards, significantly more than half the time. AI is giving you the correct answer or the correct solution to a specific problem. But you being some novice, you still don't know what they're doing in either way. Either way you are simply praying to the computer gods for something to work. The old saying of throw something on the wall and see what sticks. So in the grand scheme of things, I really don't think that vibe coding is a lot different from what people did 10 years ago. Yes, of course, people back then had lesser technologies and less efficient ways to do something. But that is simply how life is. It will gradually get easier. But one thing is for certain that people will always be learning. Their methods may change but the learning is constant. I'd say 20 years ago you, as a kid, learned from textbooks. Today your kid learns from YouTube videos. The method has changed but you're both learning.
I know there are a lot of debates as to whether vibe coding should exist or that it is destroying the coding mind of this generation, but as long as it's out there it's going to be used. And if you are someone who actually knows what you want, then I believe vibe coding isn't that bad because you'll keep trying. Unless you found what you want and at least halfway through, you'll know which path to go on which is the good old trial and error.
